Spider-Man: No Way Home was emotional for many Marvel fans, but the movie also got to Andrew Garfield. The actor snuck into a theater screening with Tobey Maguire after the movie premiered in Dec. 2021, and he immediately understood why the Marvel Cinematic Universe film impacted so many people.

Andrew Garfield describes what he felt after seeing ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ in theaters

Deadline interviewed all three Spider-Man actors — Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield — as they discussed the third MCU Spider-Man film. During the conversation, Garfield expressed his love for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

“I watched the movie with Tobey for the first time, and I was in pieces,” the actor shared. “Like, this is a deep movie. This is a movie that is about a coming of age, an acceptance of loss, acceptance of death, taking responsibility for your gifts. I was torn open by the journey that Tom went on; it’s classic Peter Parker, but it felt totally fresh and totally reimagined. It is like, Tom’s origin story was happening in his third movie rather than his first.”

Garfield continued, “There’s something so profound. So the film, I feel, stands alone without me and Tobey showing up. I hope we enhance it, but I think [director] Jon Watts and Tom have made this something, actually, that is exceptionally moving, especially for young people, you know? I think it’s a beautiful film.”

Given the outcry from fans who wanted the Oscars to nominate Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2022, it’s safe to say that many would agree with Andrew Garfield’s assessment of the film.

The actor discusses why he returned to Spider-Man

After Spider-Man: No Way Home premiered, and fans discovered Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire were in it, the actors discussed why they returned with Deadline. And for Garfield, it was all about the meaningful story.

“Well, I was just waiting to see if Tobey was going to do it, and if Tobey was going to do it, then I was like, ‘Well, I have no choice,’ you know?” Garfield joked at first. “I follow Tobey to the ends of the Earth. I’m a lemming for Tobey.”

More seriously, the actor said, “It was like, ‘Oh, the intention feels very pure here. It actually feels like a great creative idea and a great creative story.’ It wasn’t like they were just asking us to come and say hi and then leave again but actually have our presence being in service to Tom, being in service to Tom’s journey and where he is as Peter Parker.”

“And I love the destiny feeling of the multiverse expanding in this film,” Garfield concluded. “And actually, without Tobey’s Peter and Andrew’s Peter being present for Tom’s Peter at this very moment, he may not become the Peter Parker that he’s supposed to become. Getting three Spider-Men together could go one of two ways, and I think it’s a testament to these guys that it went the way that it went, which was a brotherhood, which is just beautiful.”

Hopefully, fans will see more of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man in the future.

Will Andrew Garfield ever play Spider-Man in the future?

During an interview with Variety, Andrew Garfield addressed his future after Spider-Man: No Way Home. And he didn’t deny that he would ever suit up again.

“I mean, yes, definitely open to something if it felt right,” he shared. “Peter and Spider-Man, those characters are all about service, to the greater good and the many. He’s a working-class boy from Queens that knows struggle and loss and is deeply empathetic. I would try to borrow Peter Parker’s ethical framework in that, if there was an opportunity to step back in and tell more of that story, I would have to feel very sure and certain in myself.”

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters.
