‘Spider-Man’ Star Tom Holland on Maybe Hosting the Oscars With Zendaya: ‘What Kind of F***ing Idiot Wouldn’t?’
At 25 years old, Tom Holland feels he might have already peaked in his career. After all, the newly-released Spider-Man: No Way Home has become the year’s top box-office performer, having made more than $1 billion in under two weeks. However, there might be one more major career opportunity for Holland before he decides to step away from acting: hosting the Oscars.
After seeing Holland’s epic performance in No Way Home, many fans are begging for him to lead the 2022 film awards ceremony. Although the Academy hasn’t mentioned any news of Holland hosting, the actor did recently address the possibility.
‘Spider-Man’ fans have called for Tom Holland to host the Oscars
Holland has been a hot topic on social media since Spider-Man: No Way Home’s release on Dec. 17. The Marvel film — and the finale to the Homecoming trilogy — has received rave reviews thus far, with many critics praising Holland’s skills as the web-slinging hero.
According to a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter (THR), Sony and Marvel Studios are planning a huge campaign for Spider-Man: No Way Home to take home Oscar awards, including Best Picture. In connection to the news, rumors have circulated that Holland is in the running to host the Oscars, although that remains unconfirmed.
Many fans have jumped on board with the idea of Holland stepping in as host.
“If they let @TomHolland1996 host [the] Oscars for 2022 I will def watch. He’s a great actor and [has] a great personality and will keep [people] entertained,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“Really need Tom Holland and Zendaya to host Oscars, for sure it will increase the viewerships!!” another person added.
Other fans have called for Holland and his Spider-Man predecessors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, to host the Oscars as a trio. And even if Holland doesn’t host, many people are pushing for him to take home an award.
Tom Holland says he would ‘of course’ host the Oscars if given the opportunity
Holland, who joined the Oscars ceremony as a presenter in 2018, has also given his stamp of approval on the idea of hosting. He told THR that he would “of course” host the Oscars if the Academy asked.
“I just went to the bathroom, and I was looking at myself in the mirror, and I was like, ‘What kind of f***ing idiot wouldn’t host the Oscars?’ So yeah, if they ask me to, I would, and it would be very fun. I would really enjoy it,” he said.
When asked about whether he’d prefer to host alone or with a co-star — such as his girlfriend, Zendaya — the actor said he wouldn’t mind either way. However, hosting with a loved one would make the event more fun.
“I think a shared experience is always better than a solo experience,” he added. “I could run it by [Zendaya]. But as for her answer, I’m not too sure.”
Holland might run into scheduling issues with the 2022 Oscars ceremony
As much as Tom Holland would love to host the Oscars, it might not be realistic for 2022. The show is scheduled for March, which happens to be a hectic month for Holland. His newest film, the Uncharted adaptation, hits theaters in late February, so he’ll have a press tour to do. Additionally, he’ll begin filming his AppleTV+ series, The Crowded Room, in March.
Even if he has to switch his schedule around, Holland seemed enthusiastic about the possibility of hosting.
“You know I would love to do that — I love that kind of thing, I love being put under pressure and doing things that I feel uncomfortable doing,” he told THR.
