Spy x Family Episode 1 sticks closely to the opening of Tatsuya Endo’s manga, introducing the spy Twilight and the mission that prompts the entire series. Twilight is tasked with getting close to Donovan Desmond, a political figure from a neighboring nation. To do so, he’ll have to play the role of a family man. That requires him to find a family.

Doing so on such short notice is no easy feat, but Twilight — now going by the name Loid Forger — handles the important part with ease. He adopts a child named Anya with plans to enroll her in the same school as his target’s son. Little does Twilight know that Anya has telepathic abilities.

Thus begins a hilarious relationship between the two characters. Twilight already struggles to adopt a fatherly persona, but the fact that Anya is reading his mind the whole time only adds hilarity to their interactions.

Of course, it’s not just humor the pair brings in episode 1. They also develop a touching bond, one that has the potential to get viewers in their feelings as the new anime continues.

The anime gets off to a strong start with episode 1

The Spy x Family manga is all about the relationships between the characters, and episode 1 gets the anime adaptation off to a strong start. Although it takes time to establish Twilight’s mission, the premiere highlights the show’s potential. Once it gets off the ground, it’s sure to spark some serious tensions — especially given all the secrets the main characters are keeping from one another.

That alone is enough to draw viewers in, but the anime also boasts some engaging action in its premiere. Spy x Family Episode 1 may have kept us laughing, but the show promises to go beyond comedy. It’s easy to see it ramping up the emotional stakes, and Twilight’s mission is bound to get the characters into some sticky situations.

Spy x Family Episode 2 looks to complicate the main family dynamic further, bringing a mother into the facade. The preview teases Yor’s arrival, and an assassin can only complicate Twilight’s situation further. Of course, that keeps things interesting for fans.
