‘Squid Game’ Star Park Hae-soo to Play Lead Role in ‘Money Heist’ Korean Adaptation
When Netflix announced the Spanish drama Money Heist (La Casa de Papel) was getting a South Korean remake, many fans wondered who would join the cast. Although there are little to no details about casting, the streaming service might have just given fans a tidbit of what’s to come. Squid Game star Park Hae-Soo, who played Cho Sang-woo in the survival series, will play a lead role in the Korean remake. Who will Park Hae-soo play in the ‘Money Heist’ remake?
Per Variety, South Korean actor Park Hae-soo will star in the Korean adaptation of the Spanish series Money Heist. Netflix announced that Park would play Berlin, one of the show’s most beloved characters, in the Korean remake. Park is the first actor reported to be a part of the Korean cast.
This news comes after the original series will end after its fifth season. The final installment will premiere on Netflix on Dec. 3, 2021. Additionally, Berlin will get his own spinoff series titled Berlin: A New Series. Actor Pedro Alonso, who played Berlin in the original series, will reprise his role in the spinoff. The drama series will debut in 2023.
The ‘Squid Game’ star says it’s an ‘honor’ to play Berlin in the spinoff series
In a special video message, actor Park Hae-soo talked about playing Berlin in the Korean remake of Money Heist. During the one-minute clip, the Squid Game star shared that it’s a huge “honor” to play Berlin in the new series.
“In the past five years, fans around the world have shown their love for the series. I hope our Korean version also receives your love and support,” he said while holding a Salvador Dalí mask. “It is an honor for me to participate in such a wonderful series and, above all, to make Berlin an amazing character. I’m sure the rest of the cast of the Korean version feels the same way as I do.”
Park continued, “As an actor and as a fan of the series, I want to thank the cast and crew of ‘Money Heist’ for the great series they have created. We are looking forward to sharing the Korean version of Money Heist with you in 2022.”
Lastly, he thanked Money Heist star Pedro Alonso for giving him the original mask and promised that he’d give him a custom mask from the Korean version.
Will ‘Money Heist’ creator Álex Pina be a part of the remake?
Yes, Money Heist creator Álex Pina will be a part of the Korean remake. According to Deadline, Pina will serve as executive producer for the upcoming project. Kim Hong-sun, who’s best known for his work on television dramas like The Guest, Voice, and Black, will direct the series. Meanwhile, Ryu Yong-jae and his team will write for the show – their credits include the Netflix original series My Holo Love and the tvN series Psychopath Diary.
