How long has ‘Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest’ been on the air?
Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve marks its 54th year and celebrates the year’s very best in music, features America’s favorite personalities, and takes a look at New Year’s celebrations around the globe. However, the show’s humble beginnings in the early 1970s had goals that weren’t so far-reaching. Instead, the special was a response to traditional New Year’s Eve television celebrations that didn’t connect with younger audiences.
In 1972, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve debuted as competition against Guy Lombardo’s long-running New Year’s Eve specials. Lombardo and his Royal Canadian Orchestra rang in the New Year live each year with a highbrow celebration from New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel.
The first two editions of Rockin’ Eve were broadcast by NBC and hosted by Three Dog Night and George Carlin, respectively, with Clark anchoring coverage from Times Square. The show then switched to ABC, the network it continues to air on to this day.
Clark hosted the show each year until 2004 when he suffered a stroke. Legendary talk show personality Regis Philbin subsequently stepped in as guest host for one night only.
Ryan Seacrest began officially hosting the series in 2005, and Clark made guest appearances each year until he died in 2012. Keeping Clark’s name in the show’s title is likely a way to honor his New Year’s Eve legacy.
Dick Clark’s New Year’s Eve With Ryan Seacrest airs live on Tuesday, Dec. 31, beginning at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
