Has a ‘Star Wars’ movie ever earned an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Picture’

From Darth Vader’s “I am your father” to Rey and Kylo Ren’s throne room scene, Star Wars became one of the most iconic franchises in movie history. It earned praise from old and new fans alike. However, this movie didn’t exactly earn monumental recognition at the Academy Awards.

According to CNN Entertainment, Star Wars: A New Hope “garnered 10 nominations in 1978, including one for Best Picture and the only acting nod in the franchise’s history, for Alec Guinness in the supporting role of Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

One Star Wars movie with a fair number of Oscar nominations is ‘The Force Awakens’

Thanks to Disney’s acquisition of the Star Wars franchise, and the creative minds of directors J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson, the next chapter of the Skywalker saga premiered in 2015. The Force Awakens introduced new characters like Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo Ren, bringing the studio over a billion dollars in global box office sales.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams, received 5 Oscar nominations, including Visual Effects, Film Editing, Original Score, Sound Editing, and Sound Mixing. However, the movie did not earn an award in any of these categories.

The next Star Wars movie to premiere, The Last Jedi, earned four nominations at the award show if you count the nomination awarded to the composer, John Williams. The final chance for the sequel trilogy to earn an award is at the 2020 Academy Awards, where The Rise of Skywalker picked up a handful of nominations.

Is ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ nominated at the 2020 Academy Awards?

As the last chapter of the Skywalker Saga, The Rise of Skywalker premiered during December 2020. As a result, the film picked up three nominations for the upcoming award show. Those nominations are in Best Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Editing. As a result, some fans shared their support of these films, hoping this could be the chance a movie from the sequel trilogy to earn an Oscar.

Some cast members from The Rise of Skywalker are nominated at the Academy Awards for their work with other movies. That includes Adam Driver, who portrays Kylo Ren. He stars in the Netflix original film, Marriage Story, and earned a nomination for Best Actor.

Other Star Wars-related content earned recognition at other award shows. John Williams earned a Grammy Award in the “Best Instrumental Composition” category for his song, “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Symphonic Suite.”
