The Star Wars universe is full of talented performers, from longtime franchise heroes like Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo, to relative newcomers like the brooding Adam Driver, who made waves as Kylo Ren in the sequel trilogy. Still, no one is more iconic to Star Wars fans than Mark Hamill, who will forever be known as the legendary Jedi knight, Luke Skywalker.

Hamill originated the role of Skywalker when he was a very young actor — but while Hamill’s talent and charm have gotten him far, he is definitely not one of the taller actors in the Star Wars franchise.

Born in California in 1951, Mark Hamill gravitated to acting when he was in middle school. By the time he was a teenager, he had acted in a variety of school stage productions and was active in his local drama club.

Hamill broke into the entertainment business in the early ’70s, acting in a variety of TV shows, including General Hospital and The Texas Wheelers

Hamill’s big break came in 1977 when he appeared as Luke Skywalker in George Lucas’ all-new fantasy film Star Wars. The film broke box office records and became not only the biggest movie of the year but one of the most acclaimed films of all time.

Hamill became a worldwide sensation, and the breakout star of the movie. He went on to play the character of Luke in additional Star Wars films, including Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and the new sequel trilogy. While most people still know Hamill best as Luke Skywalker, the talented actor has gone on to work in a variety of other mediums as well, including animated projects.

Mark Hamill’s other acting projects

In addition to playing the character of Luke in Star Wars, Mark Hamill has made waves for voicing the character of the Joker in many DC Comics television shows — most notably, in the 1992 – 1994 show Batman: The Animated Series.

A prolific voice actor, Hamill has lent his talents to everything from Regular Show to Avatar: The Last Airbender

Most recently, Hamill once again stepped into Luke Skywalker’s boots for the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, where he was digitally de-aged to appear as Luke, circa Return of the Jedi era.

Hamill later took to social media to reveal that keeping his involvement with the series a surprise had been difficult: “The fact that we were able to keep my involvement a secret for over a year with no leaks is nothing less than a miracle. A real triumph for spoiler-haters everywhere! #LooseLipsSinkStarships #STFU.”
