The Rise of Skywalker was a very controversial film in the Star Wars fan base. The movie, which was released in December 2019, was the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga.

There were a lot of expectations riding on the film, from new fans to those who had been following the story for decades. When it was released, reviews were mixed — many fans were unhappy with some of the creative decisions, while others felt as though the film wrapped up the Skywalker story in the best possible way.

Interestingly enough, The Rise of Skywalker pays homage to one iconic scene from the 2005 prequel film, Revenge of the Sith — even if the nod was unintentional.

When The Rise of Skywalker was first announced, viewers everywhere were excited. With numerous plot points and storylines to tie up, it was bound to be a jam-packed film.

Unfortunately, after it was released, many fans stated that it didn’t exactly wrap up the story points that had been introduced in the two preceding films, and ignored others completely. Some complaints leveled against the film accused filmmakers, especially director JJ Abrams, of trying too hard to pay fan service to some of the more toxic fans in the community.

In particular, many fans called out the ending of The Rise of Skywalker for being unsatisfying, stating that the sequel trilogy didn’t provide enough context for what ultimately happened at the end.

Many critics also slammed the film, and while it still grossed big numbers at the box office, it ultimately fell short of many of the predictions that had been made. To this day, it is a sore spot with many Star Wars fans.

Even if the overall movie failed to satisfy everyone’s expectations, some of the standalone scenes can only be described as stunning. One such scene is the one where Kylo Ren confronts Rey about her heritage.

The two cautiously circle each other like predators in the same arena, all while Kylo Ren teases Rey about the truth of her origin.

Fans took to Reddit recently to discuss the scene, pointing out how the scene definitely echoes one that was in the 2005 prequel film, Revenge of the Sith

‘Revenge of the Sith’ features a scene referenced by ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

In the Reddit post, fans referenced the scene in Revenge of the Sith, where Chancellor Palpatine talks to Anakin Skywalker (who had not yet become the villain Darth Vader) about how has actually been manipulating the Senate behind the scenes, ultimately revealing himself as the Sith Lord Darth Sidious.

From the cinematography to the dialogue, the scene in The Rise of Skywalker seems to be a direct callout to the one in Revenge of the Sith, right down to the connection to Palpatine.

“Although I despise this reveal I do love the cinematography in this scene,” one fan stated. Another pointed out that while the two scenes do indeed seem to echo each other, it was reportedly unintentional, writing that, “this is purely a coincidence. Because as Daisy revealed, that wasn’t planned while they were filming. Ben’s dialogue was recorded in ADR. Wonder what he was originally telling her.”

Other posters discussed the idea that the parallel was accidental, detailing how many plot points were changed up as the sequel trilogy progressed. Still as one fan commented, “intentional or not, it’s still a cool parallel.”
