‘Stargirl’ Season 2 Episode 9 Preview: Is Jay Garrick Alive?
The CW‘s Stargirl Season 2 has been a wild ride so far. And the surprises and twists do not seem to be stopping any time soon. Jay Garrick, played by the Arrowverse’s John Wesley Shipp, will appear in Stargirl Season 2 Episode 9, “Summer School: Chapter Nine.” All the previews and first looks at the episode make it seem like Jay, aka The Flash, will only appear via flashbacks. But forgive us for being skeptical about what’s real and what isn’t when it comes to Stargirl and its main villain, Eclipso.
What happened in episode 8?
Eclipso set his sights on targeting Rick and Beth in Stargirl Season 2 Episode 8, “Summer School: Episode Eight.” Unfortunately for one of them, Eclipso’s mind games had severe consequences.
Right out of the gate, it was clear that Eclipso was the source behind Beth’s hallucinations. He used his child form to torment her and pick apart her most profound insecurities. Eclipso claimed that she was not the right person to be Doctor Mid-Nite. He was also racist and sexist in the process. He chased Beth around Courtney’s house in the hallucination and berated her until she had enough. Beth refused to back down, even when Eclipso showed her his terrifying true form. She let go of all of her feelings that she was not strong enough or that she was not wanted. Beth chose herself to be Doctor Mid-Nite. And because she did, she was able to pull herself out of Eclipso’s mind game.
Rick, on the other hand, was not so lucky. He was made to believe that Solomon Grundy killed a little girl in the woods. Feeling betrayed, Rick tracked down Grundy and started beating him senselessly. It wasn’t until Courtney used Cosmo to blast Rick out of his delusion that he and the audience realized he was fighting his uncle, not Grundy. In reality, Eclipso used his powers to manipulate Rick into thinking that Grundy was a killer again. In the end, an ambulance took Rick’s uncle away, and a cop car took Rick to jail. And we have a feeling that his storyline will not be resolved in Stargirl Season 2 Episode 9.
What the synopsis and trailer tell us about ‘Stargirl’ Season 2 Episode 9
Per ComicBook.com, the synopsis for Stargirl Season 2 Episode 9 reads, “JOHN WESLEY SHIPP GUEST STARS AS JAY GARRICK – As Eclipso (Nick Tarabay) takes aim at the Whitmore/Dugan’s, Pat (Luke Wilson) is reminded of painful memories from his past involving the original JSA and their fight to take down Eclipso. Meanwhile, Mike (Trae Romano) is forced to confront the guilt he feels for his role in Icicle’s death, and Barbara (Amy Smart) comes face to face with someone from her past. Finally, Courtney (Brec Bassinger) struggles to hold onto hope after Eclipso targets those around her. Hunter Sansone also stars. Andi Armaganian directed the episode written by Alfredo Septién & Turi Meyer.”
In the trailer for Stargirl Season 2 Episode 9, which you can view above, Eclipso seems to be tormenting Courtney’s family via mind manipulation. And if the frost in the trailer is any indication, Icicle might make an appearance. Icicle’s son, Cameron, does say, “Everyone in this house is going to die,” near the end of the video. Perhaps Cameron is the one with the ice powers in the episode. Either way, it’s not looking good for the Whitmore/Dugan’s.
It also sounds like Pat’s hallucinations will be where fans can see Jay Garrick in Stargirl Season 2 Episode 9. Eclipso is trying to hit Courtney’s family where it hurts.
Will Jay Garrick show up in present-day Blue Valley in ‘Stargirl’?
The assumption is that all of Jay Garrick’s scenes in Stargirl Season 2 Episode 9 will be flashbacks to when the members of the original JSA were still alive. There’s no doubt that Eclipso is messing with Pat’s mind in the episode, causing him to reflect on his old JSA days. But what if Jay is, in fact, still alive?
Now, everything that follows is pure speculation. Nothing about this episode will be confirmed until it airs. But we can still have some fun and theorize about what will happen in it.
Stargirl revealed at the end of season 1 that Starman appeared to be alive, even though the audience assumed he died in the Injustice Society attacks. Now, what if the same could be said about Jay Garrick? We never actually saw Jay die onscreen. Perhaps, after the Injustice Society attacked the JSA, he tried to use time travel to save his friends. In the end, though, he only made it worse. So Jay decided to travel to another Earth (maybe Earth-3) and be The Flash there. And that’s why Stargirl‘s Jay Garrick looks like The Flash‘s Jay Garrick. They might just be the same version of The Flash.
Stargirl Season 2 Episode 9 airs Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 8/7c on The CW.
