Stevie Nicks Only Had 1 Takeaway From Her Relationship With Mick Fleetwood: ‘You’re Just the Homewrecker’
Looking back, Stevie Nicks says she has few regrets. The ones she has have to do with some of her ill-fated relationships. One of these was with bandmate Mick Fleetwood. Though she considers him one of her great loves, she says her takeaway from the relationship is a bit gloomy. She shared what she learned from the affair.
Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood began an affair
Nicks began dating Don Henley after her breakup from Lindsey Buckingham. Around the same time, she also began dating Fleetwood, who was married to Jenny Boyd. The affair wasn’t a passing fling, either.
“Eventually I fell in love with her and it was chaotic, it was on the road and it was a crazy love affair that went on longer than any of us really remember — probably several years by the end of it,” Fleetwood wrote in his book Play On.
Though Nicks loved him, she said that the relationship was driven by drugs and alcohol.
“Mick and I would never have had an affair had we not had a party and all been completely drunk and messed up and coked out, and, you know, ended up being the last two people at the party,” she said for Oprah’s Master Class. “So guess what? It’s not hard to figure out what happened — and what happened wasn’t a good thing. It was doomed. It was a doomed thing, caused a lot of pain for everybody, led to nothing.”
She shared her big takeaway from the relationship
Both Fleetwood and Nicks still hold loving feelings for one another. Nicks once even said she believes there’s a chance they could end up together.
“Maybe when we’re real old,” she said, per the book Stevie Nicks: Visions, Dreams, and Rumours by Zoë Howe. “It’s possible. I’ll always love Mick. It’s a wild thing to say, but no one could ever take that away from me.”
Despite this, she doesn’t reflect positively on the affair. She told Vulture she thinks of their relationship as “the crazy accidental affair. Never shoulda happened. And we knew it from the beginning.”
She shared the primary lesson she learned from the relationship.
“If there’s anything I learned from that relationship, it was, ‘Don’t go after other women’s husbands,’ because it never works out,” she said. “You are never gonna be the woman if you break up a marriage. You’re just the home-wrecker.”
Stevie Nicks and Mick Fleetwood’s then-wife got into a fight over the affair
While still involved with Fleetwood, Nicks arrived at the wedding of bandmate John McVie wearing a long white dress. Boyd, who was aware of the affair, saw this outfit as the final straw. She reportedly confronted Nicks in a walk-in closet.
“Jenny was screaming ‘How could you?’ as Stevie, looking more than a little embarrassed and defensive, did her best to talk herself out of a corner,” wrote Carol Ann Harris in the book Storms: My Life with Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac.
A friend helped diffuse the situation, but Nicks would continue her affair with Fleetwood.
