After Christine McVie’s death in 2022, Stevie Nicks mourned the death of her “music soulmate.” She recalled the years they spent together touring with Fleetwood Mac, relying on one another amid band turmoil. Still, Nicks said that before McVie’s death, they hadn’t spoken in some time.

Stevie Nicks said she hadn’t talked to Christine McVie before her death

Nicks and McVie shared a close bond while they toured with Fleetwood Mac. Nicks admitted that when they weren’t on tour, though, they went for long periods of time without speaking. This felt like a great tragedy to her after McVie’s death.

“This is the tragedy of it: I had not talked to Chris for a long time,” she told Rolling Stone. “Fleetwood Mac would be together for two solid years and then we would stop. During that time, when I went to do my own thing and went on tour, we hardly ever talked on the phone.”

She said that the time difference did not make conversation easy. McVie lived in England, while Nicks resides in Los Angeles.

“She lived in England,” Nicks said. “The time difference was screwed up, so it was very hard for us to talk.”

Stevie Nicks shared why she couldn’t see Christine McVie when she learned she was sick

When Nicks learned of McVie’s illness, she wanted to get to her as soon as possible. She said that McVie’s family told her to wait.

“We got a phone call from someone. He told us that she was ill,” Nicks said. “I said, ‘OK. We’re going to rent a plane right now, and we’re going to come over there.’ And then we got a call back. Her family said, ‘Don’t come until we see how things go here.’ Her family is super funny, as was she. They said, ‘If you and Mick [Fleetwood], that tall man, walk into her hospital room, she’ll go, “Am I dead?”’”

Tragically, she likely wouldn’t have been able to see McVie even if she got on a plane straight away. Nicks said that within hours of the first call, McVie died.

“So anyway, a few hours later they called and said that she’d died,” she said. “So I did not get to say goodbye to her. My plan was to go and sit on her bed and sing ‘Touched By an Angel’ to her, like I did with my dad, for two or three hours or however long it took to either bring her back or send her off. I didn’t get to do that, and I was angry.”

She sees no chance of Fleetwood Mac continuing without her

Though they weren’t in frequent communication, Nicks said McVie was one of her best friends.

“This was my music soulmate, my best girlfriend. We kept that band afloat, the two of us, by keeping the peace, no matter what,” she said. “By never letting people carry their problems into the studio, by stopping fights before they started, by making sure that our work was stellar. Even when we were doing lots of drugs, we had our eyes on everyone and everything.”

She doesn’t think Fleetwood Mac can possibly replace her, which is why she has no plans for a reunion tour.

“We were the keepers of Fleetwood Mac, and that is why we cannot replace her. We did replace Lindsey two times, and it was OK. No fighting, super fun. But Christine was different.”
