Stevie Nicks Net Worth and How She Became Famous
Stevie Nicks is best known for being a member of Fleetwood Mac. She has also had a successful career as a solo artist. Here’s a look at Nicks’ net worth, career, and how she became famous.
Stevie Nicks’ rise to fame
Nicks rose to fame after joining Fleetwood Mac. Before becoming a member of the group, she was a member of a band called Fritz. Lindsey Buckingham asked her to join after they met at a party. Nicks and Buckingham eventually broke up the band so they could form their own group call Buckingham Nicks. In 1975, Nicks and Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac. Nicks shot to stardom after the release of her hit song “Rhiannon.”
Stevie Nicks’ awards and nominations
As of this writing, Nicks has two Grammy Award wins and 15 nominations. The first win was for Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 album Rumours, which won for Album of the Year. The album has the distinction of winning a Grammy for Album of the Year, but not earning a Grammy in any other category. The second Grammy was awarded in 2003 when Fleetwood Mac received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award.
Although Rumours didn’t take home any other awards that night, it was one of the best-selling albums of all time. The album remained No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for weeks. It also resulted in four top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100.
Nicks was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame twice—once as part of a group and once as a solo artist. In 1998, Fleetwood Mac was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Nicks was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
During an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Nicks spoke about her double Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction. “It’s 22 men that are in twice for their solo work and being in a big band,” said Nicks. “And no women. Until me. So, I feel that I definitely broke a big rock ‘n roll glass ceiling.”
Nicks says she and bandmate Christine McVie made a pact during their early days in Fleetwood Mac. “Christine and I, we made a pact at the very beginning that if we were ever in a room of super famous guitar players that didn’t treat us with the respect that we thought that we deserved, that we would just stand up and say, ‘This party’s over,’ and we would walk out.”
Fortunately, Nicks says she and McVie never had to walk out. “We never actually did have to do that,” adds Nicks. “So that was a nice surprise. We never had to make a scene.”
Stevie Nicks and Dolly Parton
In the book Gold Dust Woman, author Steven Davis says Nicks was advised to adjust her musical style. Nicks and Buckingham struggled when they were trying to break into the music industry as Buckingham Nicks. Early in her career, Nicks was told she should study Dolly Parton.
After music executive Waddy Wachtel saw Nicks and Buckingham perform during a showcase, he had some ideas for the duo. According to Davis, Wachtel thought Nicks should sing country songs. He explained that at the time, he was into Dolly Parton’s music. He gave Nicks a Dolly Parton album and told her to study the country singer’s work. “You’ve got to learn [Parton’s] work,” said Wachtel in Davis’ book. “You gotta get a load of this chick!”
