After their tumultuous breakup, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham continued to work closely together in Fleetwood Mac for several decades. As they remained in close proximity to one another, they met all their new partners. Buckingham even proposed to a woman who spent a good deal of time around the band. After they broke up, she wrote a book about her experiences with Fleetwood Mac.

Stevie Nicks reportedly iced out Lindsey Buckingham’s new girlfriend when they met

When reflecting on the period after her breakup with Buckingham, Nicks said she liked when her ex-boyfriend began dating other women.

“The boys brought girlfriends on the road but the thing about that was we didn’t care they had new girlfriends!” she told The Guardian. “Because we didn’t want to be with them! We were happy they had new girlfriends! Thrilled! Oh my God, they’re happy! The pressure is off!”

Despite this, the book Gold Dust Woman: The Biography of Stevie Nicks by Stephen Davis alleges that Nicks could be unfriendly to Buckingham’s new girlfriend, Carol Ann Harris. He writes that she often didn’t speak with Harris and, when she did, it was because of Harris’ choice of clothing.

“Stevie had a quiet word with her, informing Carol that it was she, Stevie, who wore black within the Fleetwood Mac bubble, that it was an exclusive thing, and maybe Carol might want to think about wearing a different color the next time she hung around the band,” Davis wrote.

Harris wrote a book about her time with Fleetwood Mac

In 2007, Harris released Storms: My Life with Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac. Per Amazon, the memoir aimed to give readers insight “into the very heart of the band’s storms between 1976 and 1984. From interactions between the band and other stars — Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton, and Dennis Wilson — to the chaotic animosity between band members, this memoir combines the sensational account of some of the world’s most famous musicians with a thrilling love story. The parties, fights, drug use, shenanigans, and sex lives of Fleetwood Mac are presented in intimate detail and illustrated with never-before-seen photographs.”

This book was Harris’ most extensive account of her time with the band. One reviewer said the book painted Nicks as a “bubble-headed nymphomaniac,” according to Davis. When asked about the book, Nicks said she was not planning to read it. Harris confirmed this, noting that she hadn’t heard from any of the band members.

“No reactions,” she told an interviewer, per his official website. “It’s been very silent. I fully expected feedback — these are not people who stand by quietly for anything.”

According to Davis, however, a friend of Nicks later confirmed that the singer had read Harris’ book. She kept her opinion of it quiet.

“That electric crazy attraction between Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks never dies, never will die, never will go away,” she told MTV in 2009. “He’s married, he’s happy, he has three beautiful children that I love. You know, he’s found a good, happy, calm, safe place — but who Lindsey and I are to each other will never change.”

Since this interview, Fleetwood Mac fired Buckingham, but he still hopes there’s a chance of resolution.
