Stevie Nicks Reportedly Iced Out Lindsey Buckingham’s New Girlfriend
Fleetwood Mac proved that working with an ex is possible, but they never said it was easy. After Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham’s breakup, hard feelings lingered on both sides. Nicks was particularly perturbed when Buckingham brought a new girlfriend around the band. She apparently treated his new girlfriend, Carol Ann Harris, with surprising iciness. She reportedly even requested that Harris change her wardrobe to separate herself from Nicks.
Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham met in high school
Nicks and Buckingham met at a high school party. He was playing “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas & the Papas, and she began singing along on a whim. The moment was brief but impactful; two years later, Buckingham would ask Nicks to join his band, Fritz, as a vocalist.
“I think there was always something between me and Lindsey, but nobody in that band really wanted me as their girlfriend because I was just too ambitious for them,” Nicks told Rolling Stone. “But they didn’t want anybody else to have me either. If anybody in the band started spending any time with me, the other three would literally pick that person apart. To the death.”
Ultimately, though, Nicks and Buckingham did begin dating when they started producing music as a duo. They joined Fleetwood Mac as a package deal, ultimately breaking up while writing and recording the album Rumours.
Nicks reportedly wasn’t happy with his new girlfriend
After their breakup, Nicks said she avoided bringing her new boyfriends around the band for fear of upsetting Buckingham.
“We almost always had boyfriends, but they weren’t on the road because they’d just get stomped on,” Nicks told The Guardian. “For me to have a guy out on the road with us, and have Lindsey glaring at him the whole time? Or for Christine to have a guy out and John just walk past and flip him off? No, we both learned very early on that we would never bring boyfriends on the road because it created arguments.”
She says that she liked it when Buckingham brought women around because it meant he wasn’t focused on her. The book Gold Dust Woman: The Biography of Stevie Nicks by Stephen Davis tells a different story, however. Buckingham began dating Harris, and according to Davis, Nicks wasn’t happy.
She and her group of close friends who traveled with Fleetwood Mac reportedly greeted Harris with cold silence. When Nicks did acknowledge Harris, it was because she was dressed in black.
“Stevie had a quiet word with her, informing Carol that it was she, Stevie, who wore black within the Fleetwood Mac bubble, that it was an exclusive thing, and maybe Carol might want to think about wearing a different color the next time she hung around the band,” Davis wrote.
Icing out Harris didn’t work, however, and she would remain with Buckingham for eight years.
Stevie Nicks says the love between her and Lindsey Buckingham will never die
Their relationship has been over for decades, but Nicks says that the connection between herself and Buckingham will never fully die.
“That electric crazy attraction between Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks never dies, never will die, never will go away,” she told MTV. “He’s married, he’s happy, he has three beautiful children that I love. You know, he’s found a good, happy, calm, safe place — but who Lindsey and I are to each other will never change.”
