Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham’s relationship is a rock and roll soap opera. They began dating in their early 20s, and the relationship ended decades ago. Still, it continues to generate drama even as the pair are in their 70s. Toward the end of their relationship, Nicks said that Buckingham’s controlling behavior drove her further away from him until she had an affair.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham began dating before joining Fleetwood Mac

Nicks and Buckingham met as high school students. He was playing “California Dreamin’,” and she harmonized with him. Several years later, he contacted her and asked if she wanted to join his band. After enjoying minor success for a time, Nicks and Buckingham decided to try to make it as a duo. At this point, they also began dating. Nicks believes that betraying their band drove them together.

“It was like, ‘Well, we’ve done it now,’” she told Rolling Stone. “‘We’ve completely screwed up their lives forever now. So why not?’ So we became a couple.”

They remained together as they pursued music in Los Angeles. When Mick Fleetwood invited Buckingham to join Fleetwood Mac, he insisted that Nicks join with him.

Nicks said she had an affair while dating Buckingham

Though the couple was a package deal for Fleetwood Mac, their relationship was on the brink of collapse. Nicks realized very early in their relationship that she didn’t appreciate Buckingham’s controlling nature.

“From the very beginning, Lindsey was very controlling and very possessive,” she explained. “And after hearing all of the stories from my mother and how independent she was and how independent she made me, I was never very good with possessive people or with controlling people.”

Nicks revealed that while the beginning of their relationship was “the best time of our lives,” things quickly soured. She said that this worsened when they joined Fleetwood Mac.

“I ironed his jeans and sewed moons and stars on them, and made the house beautiful. I was the cleaning lady,” she told Elle. “Then we joined Fleetwood Mac and moved to LA and he became very jealous. I was trustworthy but he didn’t trust me, so he tortured me every day until I ended up having an affair.”

The affair was with a man who, surprisingly, was also named Lindsay. He worked in a restaurant owned by a friend.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham say they never got closure in their relationship

Going through a breakup while working together wore on the former couple. Even years later, Buckingham said that he never got closure in the relationship.

“That was part of the deal with Stevie and me was that we had to spend an awful lot of time together without ever having gotten closure from each other,” he told Nile Rodgers on his Apple Music 1 show Deep Hidden Meaning Radio With Nile Rodgers.

He shared that they were never able to fully move past the relationship.

“Most people, when they break up, they don’t see each other for a long time or maybe ever again,” he said. “But you’re not constantly having to not only see someone but, in my case, make the choice to do right for someone when I didn’t always feel that I wanted to, you know?”

For her part, Nicks said that while the romance between them is gone, there will always be a spark there.
