Stevie Nicks Thinks You’d Have to Be ‘Stoned’ to Find Her Young Self Attractive
Stevie Nicks frequently reflects on her past with biting honesty. The Fleetwood Mac singer has seen it all in her decades-long career, and she often criticizes her past actions. She explained that she finds her younger self completely unattractive. Nicks shared why she’s so harsh on herself.
In the ’70s, Stevie Nicks dealt with an addiction to cocaine
In 1975, Nicks and then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac. That came with long studio sessions, raucous parties, and lots of cocaine. It was recreational at first but became a problem once she started buying it. The habit was highly costly, and Nicks estimates that she spent well over $1 million on cocaine.
“At $100 a pop – that’s a gram – and we were the ones who were buying it for everybody else; not only us, but all our friends,” she told The Telegraph. “Actually, I would say millions.”
Eventually, she said that her use got out of control.
“I used to carry a gram of cocaine in my boot at all times,” she said for Oprah’s Master Class. “And it was the first thing I thought of when I woke up in the morning and the last thing I thought of before I went to bed.”
The Fleetwood Mac artist said she was ‘unattractive’
According to Nicks, she recognized that the drug was a problem.
“I can remember thinking to myself at that point, ‘Wow, who knew four years ago that, you know, that I would even be a part of anything that was this stupid.’”
Looking back, she says that she finds herself unattractive in this period of time.
“I’m like, gee, could you have just laid off the brandy and the coke and the pot for two days so that you didn’t look like your eyes were swimming in water?” she said. “Everybody else thought you looked beautiful, but that’s ’cause everybody else was stoned. You didn’t look beautiful, you looked high and unattractive. So unattractive.”
Ultimately, she stopped using cocaine after a plastic surgeon found a hole in her nasal cartilage. He told her that continued usage could kill her.
“Basically, your last hit of coke could be your last hit of anything,” she explained.
Today, Stevie Nicks loves the beauty routine she follows
These days, Nicks is kinder to herself and doesn’t speak so critically about her looks. The musician has a beauty routine which she credits for keeping her looking youthful.
“I use Crème de la Mer at night. I can afford it,” she told Elle. “Plus, I never go to bed with make-up on and I do a little massage thing two or three times a day.”
She added that staying out of the sun is likely most responsible for keeping her skin smooth and youthful.
“While everyone else is out there burning up, I’m walking around going, ‘When I do look 60, you will all look 100. Enjoy it now because you aren’t going to be happy when I look young enough to get a date and you don’t,’” she told People. “I’ll still be going out when I’m 75. Everybody else will be in the rest home!”
