Stevie Nicks Told Katy Perry to ‘Get Off the Internet’
After decades in the music industry, Stevie Nicks has taken it upon herself to offer her accumulated wisdom to younger artists like Katy Perry. Nicks recalled a conversation she had with Perry about her musical rivals. Nicks said she didn’t have any, and encouraged Perry to get off the internet so that she could say the same.
Stevie Nicks told Katy Perry her method of avoiding rivalries
While Nicks — or, more likely, her team — occasionally posts her poetry and writing to her social media accounts, the singer said she despises the internet. She believes it is a toxic place for anyone, and recalled talking to Perry about this.
“I hate [the internet],” she told Rolling Stone. “About 10 years ago, Katy Perry was talking to me about the internet armies of all the girl singers, and how cruel and rancid they were. I said, ‘Well, I wouldn’t know because I’m not on the internet.’”
Nicks sternly told Perry that if she stopped spending time online, she wouldn’t have rivals either.
“She said, ‘So, who are your rivals?’ I just looked at her,” Nicks said. “It was my steely look. I said, ‘Katy, I don’t have rivals. I have friends. All the other women singers that I know are friends. Nobody’s competing. Get off the internet and you won’t have rivals either.’”
Stevie Nicks once told Katy Perry to end her feud with Taylor Swift
In a separate interview, Nicks explained that she and Perry specifically discussed her feud with Taylor Swift. Nicks told her to put an end to the rivalry.
“I said, ‘No, Katy, I don’t, and neither do you. You are Katy Perry, you’re who you are, you do what you do and you’re great at it. I’m Stevie Nicks, I do what I do and I’m great at it. We don’t have rivals. That’s just ridiculous,’” Nicks told The New Yorker. “And she said, ‘Well, there’s, like, the Taylor Swift army and there’s, like, the Katy army and there’s like —’ And I was, like, ‘That’s just bulls***. You have to just walk away from that. Don’t carry that around in your mind because then they’re winning this game.’”
She thinks Taylor Swift is handling fame well
Nicks has spoken often about her admiration for Swift, and they’ve become friendly. She said she always wears the bracelet Swift gifted her.
“Do you see my little bracelet? [Points to a friendship bracelet Swift gave her.] I haven’t taken it off for almost a year.”
Nicks said she admires the younger artist and wishes only the best for her.
“She is really smart, but she also went through a lot before. She’s in a good place right now, and I think she has a good man,” she said. “I hope they fall deeper and deeper in love and ride off into the sunset. He does his thing and she does her thing, and then they come back together and get married and have babies if she wants that. I just want all of that for her.”
