‘Stranger Things’: Every Death, Ranked by How Many Scoops Ahoy Trips You’ll Need After Watching the Scene

'Stranger Things' doesn't shy away when it comes to the death of characters, but which character deaths hit us the hardest? Here are the death of 'Stranger Things' ranked on how many trips to Scoops Ahoy we'd have to take to dry our tears.

Stranger Things fans have experienced several character deaths throughout the first three seasons. From Barb in season 1 to Alexei in season 3, plenty of deaths have felt like a punch in the gut. On the other hand, several made us glad a character finally got what they deserved. Let’s take a look at every death throughout the entire series and rank them on how many trips to Scoops Ahoy we’d need to soothe our pain.

Stranger Things character Barb was one of the first deaths of season 1. She's seen here in a production still leaning against some lockers talking to Nancy Wheeler.

Tom Holloway and Bruce Lowe – ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3

Michael Park as Tom Holloway and Jake Busey as Bruce Lowe sit at a table in a production still from 'Stranger Things' Season 2.
Tom Holloway (Michael Park) and Bruce Lowe (Jake Busey) in ‘Stranger Things’ | Netflix

Actors: Michael Park, Jake Busey

Cause of Death: Bruce was killed by scissors to the throat by Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), and Tom was killed when Nancy (Natalia Dyer) beat him to death with a fire extinguisher.

Time of Death: Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 5 “The Flayed”

What Went Down: The Mind Flayer took over the minds of several people in Hawkins, Indiana. Among them were Bruce and Tom, who Nancy and Jonathan worked with at the local paper. In this episode, everything is completely chaotic, and it was kill or be killed. Nancy and Jonathan didn’t have a choice. However, both Bruce and Tom weren’t really great people to begin with, so we won’t miss them at all. These two require zero out of a possible five trips to Scoops Ahoy.

Executioner Connie Frazier – ‘Stranger Things’ Season 1

Catherine Dyer as Connie Frazier stands next to Dr. Brenner in a production still from ;Stranger Things; Season 1.
Lead Agent (Tobias Jelinek), Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), and Connie Frazier (Catherine Dyer) in ‘Stranger Things’ | Netflix

Actor: Catherine Dyer

Cause of Death: Brain crushed by Eleven

Time of Death: Stranger Things Season 1 Episode 8, “The Upside Down.”

What Went Down: On IMDb , she’s listed as “Agent Connie Frazier,” but Scoops Ahoy: A Stranger Things Podcast only calls her “Executioner Connie Frasier,” and it seems fitting. The lady is a killing machine and doesn’t seem to have even a glimmer of a soul. She took out Benny, so this death only takes one trip to Scoops Ahoy, and that’s in celebration.

Benny Hammond – ‘Stranger Things’ Season 1

Chris Sullivan as Benny Hammond sitting at a table with Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven in 'Stranger Things' Season 1.

Actor: Chris Sullivan

Cause of Death: A gunshot by Connie Frasier

Time of Death: Stranger Things Season 1 Episode 1, “The Vanishing of Will Byers”

What Went Down: We didn’t really get to know Benny too well, as he’s only seen in the premiere episode, but we could tell he was a good guy. He was more than willing to help Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) when he caught her stealing from his diner. However, Benny got in the way of Dr. Brenner’s right-hand lady, Connie Frazier, and she shot him in the head. We’ll need two trips to Scoops Ahoy after watching this scene.

Billy Hargrove – ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3

Dacre Montgomery as Billy Hargrove sits in a lifeguard chair in a production still from 'Stranger Things' Season 3.
Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery) in ‘Stranger Things’ | Netflix

Actor: Dacre Montgomery

Cause of Death: The Mind Flayer

Time of Death: Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 8 “The Battle of Starcourt”

What Went Down: Billy Hargrove was not a good person. He harassed Lucas and Max for most of Stranger Things Season 2, and even though he got a little better in season 3, he wasn’t winning any awards. However, we finally got a glance at Billy’s backstory, and it made us not hate him as much. Plus, we can’t forget that he did sacrifice himself to save Eleven, his sister, and their friends. For that, he gets two trips to Scoops Ahoy for us to ponder if he could’ve become a better person.

Barb Holland – ‘Stranger Things’ Season 1

Shannon Purser as Barb Holland as she's being eaten by the Demogorgon in 'Stranger Things' Season 1.
Barb Holland (Shannon Purser) in ‘Stranger Things’ | Netflix

Actor: Shannon Purser

Cause of Death: Demogorgon attack

Time of Death: Stranger Things Season 1 Episode 3, “Holly Jolly”

What Went Down: Barb Holland quickly became the first meme to come out of Stranger Things. No one wanted to believe Barb was gone. While her fate might have been up in the air for a while, it was confirmed in episode 7. Barb was Nancy’s best friend and, honestly, might still be alive if she wasn’t trying to keep Nancy out of trouble. Alas, Nancy went upstairs with Steve, and Barb went with the Demogorgon to the Upside Down. This took us three trips to Scoops Ahoy to recover.

Dr. Alexei – ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3

Alexei stands in between Joyce Byers and Jim Hopper in a production still from 'Stranger Things' Season 3.
Jim Hopper (David Harbour), Alexei (Alec Utgoff), and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) in ‘Stranger Things’ | Netflix

Actor: Alec Utgoff

Cause of Death: Bullet wound

Time of Death: Stranger Things Season 3 Episode 7 “The Bite”

What Went Down: Alexei grew on us throughout Stranger Things Season 3. At first, he was working for the Russian bad guys, but he was on Team Hawkins by the end. Unfortunately, he wasn’t long for this world and was taken out by Grigori at the Hawkins summer carnival. This one hit us where it hurt, so we’ll need at least four trips to Scoops Ahoy to recover.

Bob Newby – ‘Stranger Things’ Season 2

Sean Astin as Bob Newby stands with Joyce Byers, Jim Hopper, and Dr. Owens in the Hawkins lab in a production still from 'Stranger Things' Season 2.

5 Mistakes ‘Stranger Things’ Made About the ’80s

Actor: Sean Astin

Cause of Death: Dinner for the Demodogs

Time of Death: Stranger Things Season 2 Episode 8 “The Mind Flayer”

What Went Down: Bob Newby quickly became one of the most lovable characters ever introduced on Stranger Things. He was there for Joyce (Winona Ryder) and the rest of the Byers family when he knew next to nothing about the situation. He was a stable companion in Joyce’s life, and honestly, Bob didn’t need to go out the way he did. After saving everyone by getting the lab computers up and running, several Demodogs came bursting out of a hallway and devoured him just as he was about to reunite with Joyce. We still haven’t gotten over this one and it will take the maximum of five trips to Scoops Ahoy to dry our tears.

‘Stranger Things’ deaths that get honorable mentions

We can’t leave out Mews, Dustin’s (Gaten Matarazzo) cat, or Dart, Dustin’s pet Demodog. Of course, we need at least three scoops of ice cream to get over Mews and one to get over Dart. Dart wasn’t a good pet. He was a baby Demogorgon in training, but he did help keep the tunnels open at the end of Stranger Things Season 2 to help Dustin and his friends escape. That deserves something.

You don’t have much longer to wait until Stranger Things Season 4, and hopefully, we won’t be mourning any main characters. The upcoming season premieres in 2022.
