Superbad is one of the defining movies of 2007. Created by funnymen Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, it’s a coming-of-age comedy movie that tells the story of three friends hoping to make the best of their final days of high school. With its hilarious screenplay and performances, it has grown to be one of the biggest and most popular comedies ever.

Despite its success, it’s likely the movie will never get a sequel. But if it did, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Fogell aka McLovin) has an interesting idea for a follow-up.

Why Seth Rogen won’t do a ‘Superbad’ sequel

Even though the movie is wildly popular and has a fervent fan base that would likely show up for a second film, Rogen doesn’t want to do one. Explaining his decision in a 2020 interview with LADbible, he said he just doesn’t know where the story could go next.

“Honestly, I don’t think it requires improvement or anything to be built upon it,” he explained. “I’m unbelievably proud of it, it really holds up – people still watch it, high school kids come up to me telling me that they watched it for the first time and how they loved it. It’s worked its way into being viewed as one of the better high school movies that’s out there.”

In addition to that, he said he also wouldn’t want to negatively impact its legacy. “I’m so terrified of subtracting from it in any way with a bad sequel or spin-off that I’d never do it. I have so few actual good accomplishments that I’m horrified to f*ck with the ones I have,” Rogen continued, laughing.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse has an idea for a ‘Superbad’ sequel

In the event that Superbad actually did get a sequel, Mintz-Plasse has an idea for the storyline. Appearing on Philadelphia radio station 98.1 WOGL, he said he could see a female version of the film.

“Honestly, if there was a way to do it, that would be the way to do it,” he said. “For sure.”

For years, there’s definitely been a lack of female-centric coming-of-age movies. Films such as The Edge of Seventeen and Lady Bird have expanded into that territory and proved how successful these kinds of movies can be. Still, Mintz-Plasse acknowledged the idea would likely never see the light of day.

“I don’t think they want to touch it. I think they kind of like where it’s sitting and sometimes if you make a sequel to things it can kind of damper the first one, so I think they just wanna let it be,” he said.

What Christopher Mintz-Plasse has been up to since ‘Superbad’

While he might not be in any more Superbad projects, Mintz-Plasse is still pretty busy. Going on, he mentioned he’s in Promising Young Woman — a movie that released to theaters on Jan. 25.

“It’s a very, very intense, great movie starring Carey Mulligan, and it’s a heavy topic about sexual assault survivors, but it’s got a lot of really funny people involved, so it’s an interesting tone. It’s a bit of a revenge thriller, and I highly recommend going to check it out. It’s a great movie,” he continued.

He’s also on Blark & Son, a series that follows the titular character as he tries to navigate life with his son. That show can be found on YouTube.
