Move Over, Superman: Henry Cavill Is Game to Join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain Britain
Henry Cavill is no stranger to superhero suits, not after playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe. Man of Steel propelled the actor to fame, and he’s since gone on to play other iconic roles like Geralt of Rivia and Sherlock Holmes. Naturally, fans have wondered whether he’ll ever join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it seems there’s one character he’d consider playing in the MCU: Captain Britain.
There have been rumors of Henry Cavill joining the MCU
Captain Britain is one of the Marvel Comics characters who hasn’t made his way to the MCU, but fans have been calling for his entrance. And rumors of Cavill playing the role have circulated for quite some time. In fact, fanart of the Superman star in the suit has even made the rounds, suggesting fans would love to see Cavill as the symbol of Britain.
Sadly, reports of such a development have yet to be confirmed — and with Captain Carter taking up the shield in Marvel’s What If…?, it’s unclear if the MCU even needs another Cap. However, the actor seems open to the idea.
The Superman star seems game to play Captain Britain
Beyond the fact that Marvel Studios has yet to confirm any Captain Britain projects, there’s also the question of whether or not Cavill would even be willing to play the role. As it turns out, the actor has heard the rumors — and he finally addressed them.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill was asked which Marvel character he’d want to play. His response fit perfectly with all those Captain Britain rumors:
“I’m never going to say a Marvel character that is already being played by someone else … because everyone’s doing such an amazing job. However, I have the internet and I have seen the various rumors about Captain Britain and that would be loads of fun to do a cool, modernized version of that — like the way they modernized Captain America. There’s something fun about that, and I do love being British.”
When put that way, it does seem like Cavill is the ideal person to bring the character to life. Of course, there’s no confirmation Captain Britain is even on his way to the MCU — or that the actor will play him. Also uncertain is his future in the DCEU.
Will Henry Cavill continue to play Superman?
Even if Cavill never gets his chance to play Captain Britain, he’ll at least be able to don the Superman suit going forward — right? That’s a question fans have been asking, and there doesn’t appear to be a clear answer. Although Cavill seems open to the idea of returning as Superman, he’s reportedly not slated for any future DCEU projects.
Only time will tell what the future holds for the actor — and which superhero suit he’ll wear next. In the meantime, fans can catch him in The Witcher Season 2, which drops on Netflix on Dec. 17.
