‘Supernatural’ Star Jared Padalecki Once Gave a Scared Girlfriend Shoddy Advice on How to Handle a Ghost
Former Supernatural brother and current Walker star Jared Padalecki loves to tell stories about his years playing Sam Winchester. For many fans, he will always be Sammy, aka Moose, aka Sam, the loving, intellectual younger brother of Dean Winchester.
During his 15 years on Supernatural, Padalecki received a small education in mythology, folklore, the occult, and all types of supernatural beings.
That means he (and co-star Jensen Ackles) may have picked up a thing or two about hauntings, monsters, and various types of spirits. But once upon a time, a girlfriend asked him for some advice on ghosts and it wasn’t exactly what she needed.
The Winchesters were skilled in hunting and magic
Never forget that in addition to wielding guns, axes, machetes, and angel blades, Sam and Dean knew how to cast intricate spells. They used them to summon entities, cast out spirits, or to change the outcome of a situation. Whether those spells were real is a discussion for another day, but fans would sometimes send Padalecki and Ackles instructions in the mail.
According to an interview with Supernatural magazine from 2008, the two actors grew accustomed to receiving protection spells and charms that they never used.
However, many would also seek advice on how to handle a “spooky” occurrence. While Ackles admitted he’d just say he didn’t know, Padalecki was more inclined to dish out what he told his then-girlfriend.
Jared Padalecki once gave questionable ghost advice to girlfriend
When speaking to the magazine, Padalecki shared that his lady love had a real fear of ghosts. His Supernatural instincts sort of kicked in when she ran into an issue.
“My girlfriend is completely scared of ghosts,” he said. “She can’t watch a commercial for a scary movie because she’s like, ‘Ghosts!’ I remember one time she was having trouble sleeping, so I bought her some door locks for her bedroom. I was like, ‘Lock your door. Turn your alarm on.’ And she said, ‘Locks don’t work against ghosts,’” Padalecki hilariously recalled.
Apparently, he neglected to provide her with salt and iron, which are tools of the Supernatural trade.
It’s unclear whether he was referring to his now-wife Genevieve Padalecki, as the pair began dating in mid-2008.
Padalecki startled himself once too
2008 was still early in the series for Padalecki, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t conditioned from what he learned on the set of Supernatural. He told the outlet, “You always hear about cold spots in a room or lights flickering or something like that.” Padalecki remembered watching the show one evening.
“I was watching the first season finale with my parents — and the lights started flickering, and I was like, ‘The demons.’ I just found myself saying that. And I was like, ‘It’s ingrained in me!’”
These days, fans will only find Padalecki chasing ghosts and other beings in reruns of Supernatural on Netflix, TNT, or TBS.
He’s currently starring in The CW’s Walker where the only ghost is one from his character’s past — his dead wife. Tune in each Thursday at 8 p.m. EST.
