‘Survivor 40: Winners at War’: Tyson Apostol Explained How He Hid His Peanut Butter-Smelling Breath
On Survivor 40: Winners at War Episode 6, Tyon Apostol became the first castaway living on the Edge of Extinction to purchase food with his fire token as opposed to saving it for an advantage if he re-enters the game. After the episode aired, Tyson took to his Instagram story to explain how buying peanut butter is an advantage and how he hid his peanut butter-smelling breath from the other starving castaways.
Tyson Apostol voted out on ‘Survivor 40: Winners at War’ Episode 4
Initially placed on the dominating Dakal tribe, Tyson Apostol almost immediately had a target on his back, thanks to Yul Kwon. The Cook Islands champ did his research before the game started and discovered Dakal tribemates Kim Spradlin-Wolfe and Tyson competed in a poker tournament alongside Sele tribe members Boston Rob Mariano and Jeremy Collins last year.
Dakal lost the first immunity challenge, and Tyson scrambled to save himself by suggesting everyone vote for Amber Mariano, his friend’s wife, instead, which they did.
Once Dakal lost their second immunity challenge, he proposed they eliminate Nick Wilson, and everyone initially agreed. However, wanting to save his ally, Yul informed the David vs. Goliath winner of the plan, and suggested they vote Tyson out instead.
Ultimately it worked, and the well-liked Blood vs. Water champ joined Natalie Anderson, Amber, Danni Boatwright, and Ethan Zohn at the Edge of Extinction.

Everyone except Tyson already earned at least one fire token because the others completed the grueling log effort task, so he was the only one who had nothing.
When the clue arrived explaining where the contestants could find a hidden advantage to sell, Tyson quickly figured out it was located at the bottom of the cliffside along the shoreline. He successfully sold the Idol Nullifier to Parvati Shallow and then immediately cashed in on a massive jar of peanut butter.
In his confessional, Tyson explained he did not want to “look the fool” by saving his tokens if he didn’t get back into the game, so he would rather spend it on something to give him nutritional value and make him happy while he’s on the Edge.
Tyson Apostol explained how he hid his peanut butter breath on the Edge
Many people thought no one would buy any food while living on the Edge of Extinction because they would want to save them to purchase an advantage if they re-entered the game.
Therefore, they thought Tyson was joking around and didn’t realize he made a smart move by buying the peanut butter. In a video he posted to his Instagram Story, he explained eating peanut butter is an advantage because of the immense amount of protein that could help him compete better in the re-entry duel.
Additionally, the stay-at-home dad saw the jar before completing the transaction and got to choose between creamy and chunky. He chose the latter because the contestant’s don’t get much “difference in texture” while living on the island.
Finally, the Blood vs. Water winner explained he dug a hole for the jar and snuck off to eat it, and then hid his peanut butter-smelling breath by gargling with salt water and chewing on things he found on the Edge.
From the explanations he gave in current time, it doesn’t sound like anyone figured out he was eating peanut butter on the side. Survivor 40: Winners at War airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
