The Sweet Way Meghan Markle Thanked Simon Rex After He Refused to Help the Tabloids Lie About Her
After Meghan Markle went public with her relationship with Prince Harry in 2016, news outlets scrambled to dig up information about her. Some tabloids even went as far as to lie about her.
Actor Simon Rex, who has worked with Meghan in the past, opened up about being offered money to spread a rumor about her. When Rex refused, Meghan reached out to thank him in a sweet way.
Simon Rex was given money to say he dated Meghan Markle
Before becoming the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan was a Hollywood actor. As such, she had connections to many people in the industry, including Rex. The two of them worked on an episode of the sitcom Cuts together back in 2005.
In 2020, Rex shared on the Hollywood Raw podcast that some news outlets wanted to take advantage of the connection to spread a rumor about Meghan and Rex dating.
“Nothing happened,” Rex explained. “We never even kissed. It was just like, we hung out once in a very non-datey way, She was just someone I had met on a TV show and, like, we got lunch. That was the extent of it. The tabloids, actually, when that story broke, a couple British tabloids offered to pay me a lot of money to say a lie that we actually hooked up.”
He added, “I said no to a lot of money because I didn’t feel right lying and f***ing up the royal f***ing family. It was a lot of money, man. I think they offered me, like, $70,000.”
Simon Rex reveals how Meghan Markle thanked him
Rex told The Guardian in a recent interview that he was “broke as f***” and “really needed the money” that the tabloids wanted to pay him. When Meghan found out that he did not lie about her for money, she reportedly sent Rex a thank you letter.
“She said: ‘It’s nice to know there are still good people,” Rex shared. The outlet wrote that he “has it framed in his home out in Joshua Tree.”
Meghan Markle has been trying to fight misinformation in the media
In the past few years, Meghan has been the subject of constant misinformation in the media. As such, she has been speaking out about this topic and even taken legal actions against some news outlets.
After being awarded a win for an invasion of privacy case in November 2021, Meghan said in a statement, “We all lose when misinformation sells more than truth, when moral exploitation sells more than decency, and when companies create their business model to profit from people’s pain.”
When she later appeared at The New York Times’ DealBook Online Summit, the duchess shared her belief that the tabloids should come with a warning label.
“Hopefully, one day they come with a warning label like cigarettes do. Like, ‘This is toxic for your mental health,’” she said.
