Sydney Sweeney has certainly been getting her fair share of attention these days. Thanks to her roles on hit shows like The White Lotus and Euphoria, she’s become one to watch in Hollywood. However, not all of her attention has been positive. Back in May of 2021, the actor-producer was subjected to some pretty nasty comments on Twitter. After some users called her “ugly”, the 24-year-old began trending on the wildly popular social media platform.

Sydney Sweeney made a tearful video after she learned trolls on Twitter were calling her ‘ugly’

Unfortunately, some of the hurtful comments caught the attention of Sweeney. After noticing that she was trending, she checked out some of the comments. And while the majority of people were defending Sweeney’s looks and talent, it was was the hateful comments that The Handmaid’s Tale alum saw. It wasn’t long before the actor took to her Instagram live to address being called ugly.

“Apparently I am trending on Twitter right now for being ugly,” Sweeney said in a tearful video. “I think it’s really important for people to see how words actually affect people. I know everyone says, ‘You can’t read things,’ and ‘You shouldn’t read things,’ but like, I’m a f***ing person! I’m just sitting here with my dog, Tank, watching HGTV wearing my Snuggie. People need to be nicer on social media because this is really f**** up.”

The ‘Euphoria’ star was already having a terrible day when she learned she was trending on Twitter

While Sweeney was only live for a few seconds, her tearful plea got picked up in the mainstream media. However, according to the actor, she never intended for that to happen. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Sweeney revealed that she still isn’t used to being famous and people paying attention to what she does. Furthermore, she shared that her response was out of character for her and more of a result of already having a pretty crappy day.

In the interview, Sweeney recalled the day that she ended up trending on Twitter. It started with a photo shoot for a lingerie company. Unfortunately, Sweeney started her period that day. In an attempt to stop it, she took a mixture of pain relievers and birth control pills. However, the mixture of medications caused another host of issues.

“I did that and went to the photo shoot an hour later and started feeling dizzy and nauseous,” Sweeney recalled. “I was like, ‘F***, maybe I need to eat something.’ I had a muffin and it did not make me feel good. All of a sudden, I threw up in the middle of this shoot, everywhere. I was a mess. I felt so embarrassed. I was jacked on so many different hormones. And I was appalled at myself because I’m always so on top of it and professional. I had to go home.”

Sweeney was also dealing with friend issues before being called ‘ugly’

But things didn’t get better after Sweeney got home. As she was still feeling bad, she decided to cancel some plans she’d previously made with a friend. However, that didn’t go over well either. “That night, one of my friends really wanted me to go out with her and I texted her and said, ‘I can’t come.’ I think it was the last straw, me bailing on her. She said that she couldn’t rely on me and didn’t want to be my friend anymore,” The Players Table star revealed.

Naturally, Sweeney was upset that she was losing a friend which moved her to tears. Meanwhile, she was still vomiting thanks to the medications she’d taken. It was then that she discovered that some people were calling her ugly on Twitter. After already having a crappy day, the actor was at her breaking point and she went live to let off some steam. She never expected it to become a thing.

Sweeney reflects on her going live on Instagram

“I went on for, like, maybe 12 seconds,” Sweeney recalled. “I did not think anyone was going to record it. I just needed to let it out. Then it just went everywhere and it became its own beast.” In retrospect, Sweeney admits that she’s a bit embarrassed by her video. However, she doesn’t regret doing it. As someone who’s been bullied in the past, Sweeney is aware that some people deal with that kind of negativity every day, and ultimately, she’s glad she spoke up about it.
