Sydney Sweeney’s Red Hair Is Actually Closer to Her Natural Color
Sydney Sweeney has been in the news quite a bit lately. From her standout performances in Euphoria Season 2 and The White Lotus, to her relationship status, the starlet has received her fair share of attention. However, recently she received some press after making a major change to her hair. Sweeney swapped out her blond locks for a copper red color.
Sydney Sweeney explained why she dyed her hair red
Fans of the MMA fighter have gotten used to her as a blonde. However, she recently switched things up by debuting red tresses. And while Sweeney herself was looking for a change, switching up her hair was mostly done for the sake of work. In an interview with Glamour, the actor-producer revealed that she went red for her latest movie role.
“Well, I did it for a movie called, National Anthem,” Sweeney shared of her new red hair. “My character’s name is Penny Jo and I wanted to change it up from being blonde. I’ve been a blonde for Cassie for a while and I wanted something that felt more like my character. I cut my hair, gave myself bangs, and changed my color, because I wanted to embody Penny Jo in a different kind of way.”
What is the ‘Euphoria’ star’s natural hair color?
While many fans were surprised by the change, Sweeney’s red hair is actually closer to her natural hair color. Because blonde suits her so well, many people assumed she’d been born with the color. However, Sweeney’s actually naturally closer to having auburn hair. “I am a natural brunette actually, with a little bit of red.”
So why did Sweeney go blonde to begin with? She went blonde to bring another one of her characters to life. Her Euphoria character, Cassie Howard, was blonde so Sweeney needed to switch up her looks. Unfortunately, dyeing her locks compromised the health of her hair.
Going blonde compromised the health of Sweeney’s hair
“The first time I dyed my hair blonde, I cried my eyes out because my hair naturally was [long],” Sweeney shared with Bustle. “[When] I dyed my hair blonde, I didn’t even cut it but it went up to my shoulders. It’s so weird; my nails grow super fast, but my hair doesn’t. It’s been a battle of trying to get my hair to be healthy. I’ve been working on it [and] it’s getting better.”
The Players Table producer admits that she invests a lot of time into keeping her locks healthy. From using heat-protectant sprays to masks, Sweeney is serious about taking care of her mane. But the thing she credits for the biggest positive change in her hair is actually a special showerhead. “One of the biggest changes is this shower head that filters the water,” Sweeney explained. “The water isn’t as harsh and there are not as many chemicals in it. That has changed everything.”
Clearly, Sweeney doesn’t mind switching things up for her many roles. It’ll be interesting to see what color (and character) she takes on next.
