Taye Diggs Says He Lost a Chance to Hook Up With Britney Spears: ‘I Feel Like I Missed My Opening’
Fans may know Taye Diggs for his roles in projects such as All American, Brown Sugar, Murder in the First, and The Best Man, but he’s also a Broadway performer.
He starred in the original version of Rent and parlayed his theater skills as a singer and dancer into other opportunities. Back in the day, Diggs once had a gig working with Britney Spears, and he thinks he lost his shot at hooking up with the pop singer.
Taye Diggs says he missed a Britney Spears hook-up opportunity
In a new interview for SiriusXM show Radio Andy, Taye Diggs got a little personal. ET Canada shared the video on their site with only Diggs in the frame. Host Andy Cohen wasted no time asking probing questions about Diggs’ romantic life and past, and somehow things pivoted to Britney Spears.
Diggs had a dancer role in Spears’ music video for her 2002 remix single, “Boys.” This version was on the Austin Powers in Goldmember soundtrack, and the video also featured Mike Myers, Justin Long, and Jason Priestly. Though Diggs had a few popular movies under his belt at that stage in his career, he admitted to Cohen that when he met Spears, he was starstruck.
But he felt like he could have had a chance with Spears. “I feel like I had an in because we were in between shots and she said, ‘Hey, you’re a good dancer,” said Diggs.
He explained that he gave a goofy response. “But I felt like that was my in if I wanted to do a little something, and I missed it. I feel like I missed my opening.”
Cohen asked if Diggs meant “little something” referred to dating or dancing, and the actor bluntly said no. “No, just have sex with her,” he replied. It’s not the answer Cohen expected to hear. A clip is posted on YouTube.
Diggs used to be married to Idina Menzel
Diggs shares a son with ex-wife Idina Menzel, a fellow thespian who plays Elsa in the Frozen franchise. Both theater actors, they met in the 1990s while working on Rent and wed in 2003. The couple divorced in 2014, and Diggs is currently single.
While on Radio Andy, Diggs talked about his February appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show when Tiffany Haddish hosted. Haddish encouraged him to get on a dating app, but he seemed hesitant. He told Cohen that he still hasn’t gotten into the app world, but he’s open to DMs. Sometimes, Diggs lets his 11-year-old son give him input on that topic.
Diggs is set to be a dating game contestant
He may be single now, but that could change for Diggs thanks to ABC’s upcoming series, The Celebrity Dating Game.
It’s based on the popular matchmaking show previously hosted by Chuck Woolery, but this modern version features song clues from Michael Bolton. Zooey Deschanel is hosting alongside Bolton.
Diggs is one of three famous contestants whose identities will be cloaked from their panel of eligible singletons. Will he make a love match? Diggs, Iggy Azalea, and Hannah Brown are in the debut episode that drops on June 14 at 10 p.m. EST.
