Olivia Rodrigo’s new song “Drivers License” officially has the approval of Taylor Swift. After releasing “Drivers License” on Jan. 8, the song jumped to No. 3 on the iTunes Top Songs chart.

The two songs ahead of “Drivers License” on the iTunes chart were Swift’s “It’s Time to Go” and “Right Where You Left Me.” On Instagram, Rodrigo shared her excitement for “Drivers License” landing near Swift’s songs, and Swift shared her support for Rodrigo.

‘Drivers License’ is Olivia Rodrigo’s debut single

Rodrigo stars on the Disney+ mockumentary High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The show was considered a success and was renewed for a second season while Rodrigo signed with Geffen Records to launch a solo career.

“Drivers License” is both Rodrigo’s debut single and the lead single from her upcoming debut EP. Before releasing the song, Rodrigo teased “Drivers License” for months on social media, making it a highly-anticipated single.

In “Drivers License,” Rodrigo sings about a heartbreak she experienced as she drives around after getting her drivers license. While she used to dream of being able to drive to her ex’s house on her own, she instead finds herself aimlessly driving around as she remembers her ex.

“When I came up with ‘Drivers License,’ I was going through a heartbreak that was so confusing to me, so multifaceted,” Rodrigo told Uproxx. “Putting all those feelings into a song made everything seem so much simpler and clearer—and at the end of the day, I think that’s really the whole purpose of songwriting. There’s nothing like sitting at the piano in my bedroom and writing a really sad song. It’s truly my favorite thing in the world.”

Taylor Swift praised Olivia Rodrigo

“Drivers License” received critical acclaim upon its release, and it quickly entered the Top Songs chart on iTunes. When the song reached No. 3 on the chart just below Swift’s songs, Rodrigo shared a screenshot of the iTunes chart on Instagram.

“next to taylor on the us i tunes chart i’m in a puddle of tears,” Rodrigo captioned the post.

Swift commented on the photo, “I say that’s my baby and I’m really proud.”

Rodrigo replied to Swift, “crying like a baby! thank you for everything u do!!!!!”

The Disney+ star then proceeded to make a TikTok featuring Swift’s speech from the 2007 Country Music Association Awards when she received the Horizon Award. In the video, Rodrigo stood in front of Swift’s Instagram comment and lip-synced to Swift saying “I can’t even believe this and this is definitely the highlight of my senior year.”
