In the aftermath of the 2024 presidential debate, Taylor Swift publicly endorsed Kamala Harris as a candidate. In a statement, she explained why she will be casting her vote for Harris in November. The move comes after several days of backlash from critics and fans alike for her friendship with Brittany Mahomes.

On Sept. 8, Swift attended the U.S. Open to watch the match between Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner. With her were Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes, and Brittany Mahomes. Brittany Mahomes has spent the end of her summer embroiled in controversy over what some view as her support of Donald Trump.

In August, Mahomes liked a post from the former president outlining the “2024 GOP Platform.” In it, Trump listed priorities like carrying out the “largest deportation operation in American history,” cutting funding to schools teaching Critical Race Theory, and keeping “men out of women’s sports.” She pushed back against fans who questioned her reasons for liking the post.

“I mean honestly, to be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood,” she wrote on Instagram. “There’s no reason your brain is fully developed and you hate to see others doing well.”

Former President Trump later thanked Mahomes for her support. Because of this, Swift’s fans expressed disappointment to see her embracing Mahomes at the U.S. Open. While Swift endorsed President Joe Biden in 2020, she had yet to put her support behind Harris, which many fans criticized.

In August, Swifties also called out the singer for her initial lack of comment on AI-generated images depicting her and her fans endorsing Trump.

Taylor Swift threw her support behind Kamala Harris following the 2024 presidential debate

After several days of controversy and online infighting amongst her fans, Swift publicly put her support behind Harris.

“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” Swift wrote in an Instagram post. “I’m voting for [Harris] because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I believe she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much  more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”

She also referenced the AI images, noting that they made her realize she needed “to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter.”

She encouraged her fans to register to vote and signed off as “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady” in reference to remarks made by vice presidential candidate JD Vance in 2021.

On Wednesday morning, Trump responded to Swift’s endorsement of Harris.

“I actually like Mrs. Mahomes much better if you want to know the truth,” Trump told Fox News (per MSNBC). “She’s a big Trump fan. I was not a Taylor Swift fan.”

He added that he believed Swift would end up paying the price for her endorsement.

“It was just a question of time. … You couldn’t possibly endorse Biden. You look at Biden — you couldn’t endorse him,” he said. “But she’s a very liberal person. She seems to always endorse a Democrat, and she’ll probably pay a pay price for it … in the marketplace. But no, I liked Brittany.”

Harris’ camp has expressed their gratitude over Swift’s endorsement.
