Taylor Swift and Joe Jonas reportedly dated for a few months in 2008. She can be seen in the 2009 film Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience, performing alongside him and his brothers in footage from an August 2008 show. Swift and Jonas were spotted hanging out at the MTV Video Music Awards that year. They allegedly split sometime in October 2008.

More than a decade later, Swift and Jonas are on friendly terms. Both have long since moved on to actors (Swift is with Joe Alwyn, while Jonas is married to Sophie Turner) and have attended many of the same award shows and industry events. However, the record of their relationship lives on. Here are Swift’s songs about Jonas and how they charted on the Billboard Hot 100.

‘Forever & Always’

By now, this story is infamous. Appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in November 2008, Swift spoke about Jonas. She said there was “one song” about him, a last-minute addition to her album Fearless. After explaining that they’d broken up recently, Swift referred to him as “the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18.”

The song is about wondering what you did wrong as a relationship falls apart, and reflecting on past promises. As Swift told DeGeneres, Jonas was her first celebrity relationship, making it even more traumatic of an experience. “We haven’t spoken since,” she added. “Forever & Always” peaked at No. 34, remaining on the Billboard chart for three weeks.

‘Last Kiss’

For Swift’s next album, Speak Now, she was able to dig deeper into her relationship with Jonas. Released in 2010, it’s the only album in her catalog in which she wrote every single song without any co-writers. Because of this, it — even more than her others — reads like a diary, with references to at least a couple of her famous ex-boyfriends.

“Last Kiss,” which made the Billboard chart for a week at No. 71, is thought to be about Jonas. In the song, she sings, “I ran off the plane/That July 9th,” which fans noted as a date she attended a Jonas Brothers concert in 2008. Additionally, the song’s liner notes secret message spelled out “Forever and Always,” indicating the songs are about the same person.

‘Better Than Revenge’

Aside from “Forever & Always,” “Better Than Revenge” is the song most Swifties say is about Jonas. The Speak Now track is not a mournful ballad about a lost relationship, but rather a vengeful song. In it, she sings about getting back at a woman who is now with her ex, warning him that she is “an actress.”

When listeners connected the dots, it became clear that Swift was referring to actor Camilla Belle, who Jonas met when she starred in the music video for the Jonas Brothers song “Love Bug.” Belle and Jonas became official very soon after he and Swift broke up, dating until 2010. “Better Than Revenge” spent one week on the Billboard chart at No. 56.
