Folks know by now that Taylor Swift is re-releasing her first six albums, and the latest one fans have heard from is “Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version).” The singer shared a clip of the re-recorded song on her Instagram story, and it had one specific similarity to her teasing “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” back in December 2020. Here’s what the rollout for these two songs have in common.

Taylor Swift is re-recording songs from her first six albums

After not reaching an agreement to own her music masters for her first several albums, Swift has publicly said that she is re-recording her music. Now under Universal Music Group, Swift has the masters to her new music going forward, which means she’ll own her earlier bodies of work that she re-records.

Swift’s first full re-recorded album will be Fearless, which she shared an announcement on Instagram on Feb. 11. Fans predicted that Fearless will be released on April 9, per a hidden message in Swift’s post. The first re-recording that Swift put out to the public was “Love Story (Taylor’s Version).” She dropped the single on Feb. 12.

But prior to officially releasing the new version of “Love Story,” fans got to hear the song in a preview first. They heard it in a commercial.

Ryan Reynolds teased Taylor Swift’s ‘Love Story (Taylor’s Version)’

On Dec. 2, 2020, Ryan Reynolds shared a commercial for the dating company Match. It appeared to just be an advertisement, but when Swifties played the video, they realized that the commercial featured audio to the re-recorded “Love Story.” This was the first time Swift’s fans heard any of Swift’s re-recordings and signaled that “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” would be the first release.

Her re-recorded song playing in a commercial pointed to a new era for Swift’s music. Now that she owns the rights to her older songs through the re-records, Swift is licensing them out for usage in television and movies, which she will profit from.

And “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” might have been the first re-record to debut in a commercial. But it wasn’t the last.

Ahead of the 2021 Grammy Awards, Swift shared a trailer to the new movie Spirit Untamed. The clip, which a fan uploaded on Twitter, contained a snippet of her “Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version)” recording. This is a new version of the song from 2014’s 1989.

Just like with “Love Story (Taylor’s Version),” the newest re-recording from Swift can first be heard in a commercial. The singer has yet to announce a release for “Wildest Dreams (Taylor’s Version),” but if the prior single was a precedent, fans should be able to hear the full song in a few months.

Until then, Swift is currently up for several Grammy Awards at the music ceremony on March 14. She’s nominated for many awards from her album folklore, and fans will be rooting the mega-star on.
