Fans are eagerly waiting to find out the Ted Lasso Season 3 release date. The Apple TV+ comedy became a phenomenon in its first season, and fans eagerly awaited season 2 in 2021. Both seasons premiered during the summer, but co-creator and Coach Beard actor Brendan Hunt thinks that’s unlikely for season 3. Here’s why.

‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3 is filming later than usual

Ted Lasso Season 2 filmed under COVID-19 safety protocols in 2021. After the season 2 finale in October, showrunner Bill Lawrence said they were already in the writers room on scripts. On Feb. 7, Hunt said they had not yet begun filming because of a “football wrinkle.” They’re waiting to get on the pitch to film the all important soccer scenes.  A show about a soccer team kind of depends on filming soccer games, especially with the rivalry between AFC Richmond and West Ham in the story. So they’re not going to rush.

“We’re in pre-production and scripts are written,” Hunt told TVLine. “We are definitely starting later this year than in Season 2, that’s for sure. It’ll happen, and it’ll take longer than people want it to, [but] we’re just going to try and get it right.”

‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3 release date likely will be after summer

Ted Lasso Season 1 premiered in August 2020 and season 2 July 2021. Hunt prepared fans for the Ted Lasso Season 3 release date to come later in the year 2022. Still, there are some prime months in the fall of 2022. Perhaps Ted Lasso Season 3 can be a Christmas show.

“I would be surprised if our delivery dates were the same,” Hunt said. “That’s above my pay grade, I don’t know for sure, but I do have a vague understanding of the limits of this dimension we call time, and I would say it seems pretty unlikely that we would [premiere] as early this year.”

Apple TV+ did not confirm a delay or release date to TV Line.

The beginning of the end

Hunt added that Ted Lasso Season 3 won’t necessarily pick up right where season 2 left off. Nate (Nick Mohammad) turned on Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and left AFC Richmond for West Ham. Hunt said season 3 will pick up some time later, perhaps at the beginning of a soccer season.

Hunt, Lawrence and Sudeikis always talked about a three season storyline for Ted Lasso. In October, Lawrence said they are only halfway through

“Jason was very candid about this being The Empire Strikes Back, where everybody has to make some decisions about how they are going to move forward in the last year,” Lawrence said. “Key is, none of these decisions are really the end of a story. Sam’s decision doesn’t mean that everything is done and resolved for him. It means he’s got a course of action of what he wants to accomplish and what he wants his platform to be.”
