How ‘Ted Lasso’ Gets the UK Right — Inside the Filming Location of the Apple TV+ Series
Ted Lasso Season 2 premiered on July 23, 2021, and the Apple TV+ series continues to get the United Kingdom (UK) right. From the setting to the filming locations and the overall feel, the comedy is heartwarming and very UK. Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Phil Dunster, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed and Juno Temple all returned for the second season of the comedy series.
Is ‘Ted Lasso’ American or British?
Ted Lasso is an American TV series, but it is set in London, England. However, the question is so common because almost everyone in the show has a British accent. The main character, Ted Lasso, is a coach from the college level of American football. He made an unexpected job change, flying from Kansas City to Richmond to coach a football club, a sport which he knew nothing about before arriving. English football is what Americans typically call soccer, and consequently, they are two completely different sports.
What city is ‘Ted Lasso’ set in?
Ted Lasso is set in the real-life town of Richmond, which is located about 10 miles southwest of London in the United Kingdom. According to Dirt, Producers filmed the AFC Richmond headquarters at the SkyEx Community Stadium in Hayes and the Selhurst Park Stadium in London. The outside of Ted’s Richmond apartment is a real home in the town. However, the producers filmed the interior shots at a nearby studio in London.
The Richmond Theatre featured in Ted Lasso Season 1 Episode 2 and the neighborhood pub are actual places in Richmond. The Crown & Anchor pub is known as The Prince’s Head in real life. Plus, it is indeed right around the corner from Ted’s apartment.
However, only the exterior of the popular pub is featured in the series. But, production designer Paul Cripps explained that they went to great lengths to recreate the interior of the real-life pub. Instead, they film Ted Lasso‘s pub scenes on a studio set in West London Film Studios.
“It’s not just a work-based comedy; it’s really about character,” Cripps told Goldderby via Dirt. “So I felt that the environment had to feel real, and you had to kind of buy into the belief of that. And then you would allow the comedy to come through the characters and the script rather than through the set, as it were.”
How did ‘Ted Lasso’ get the UK right?
According to a British journalist from Mashable, Ted Lasso gets many more things right about the UK than wrong. A few minor details don’t sit well. The first season made a fuss about ties in London Football when it was a “draw.” However, more often than not, the journalist pointed out the many ways in which Ted Lasso gets the UK right. He added that the show sees the “best of us in our darkest hour.” Not only is the setting and location on point, but the overall warm feeling is there, too.
“Decent, uplifting, soul-soothing, occasionally getting its adopted homeland wrong, but way more often getting its essential humanity basically, lovingly, hopefully right,” the outlet concluded.
Can I watch ‘Ted Lasso’ in the UK?
According to Apple TV+, the streaming service is available in the UK right now to watch Ted Lasso. Season 2 of the series came out the same day in the UK as it did in the United States. The streaming service offers similar content throughout the world, available in over 100 countries. However, the prices might differ in the UK.
