‘Ted Lasso’ Wins for Outstanding Comedy Series — Jason Sudeikis’ Emmy Speech Was Completely in Character
It is no surprise that Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series. However, the best part might be the Emmy speech from Jason Sudeikis. He remained entirely in character. Believe it.
‘Ted Lasso’ Emmy Awards 2021
The academy nominated the Apple TV+ comedy series Ted Lasso for 20 Emmy Awards in 2021. However, they took home less than expected. But the series won the overall category of Outstanding Comedy Series, so maybe that makes up for those other losses. Ted probably agrees.
The most exciting wins of the evening were for the actors. Roy Kent finally had something to smile about. Brett Goldstein won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Hannah Waddingham won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and Sudeikis won Outstanding Lead Actor. His Ted Lasso Emmy speech was as humble as you would imagine.
The heartwarming, uplifting comedy topped the night with its win for Outstanding Comedy Series.
Jason Sudeikis’ Emmy speech to the ‘Ted Lasso’ Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy Award win
When Sudeikis won his Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, he thanked many women. The actor also took a moment to stare at his golden statuette before giving a very Ted Lasso Emmy speech.
“I would say his show is about family,” he began. “This show is about mentors and teachers. This show is about family, and I wouldn’t be here without those three things in my life.”
He thanked many people and also his teammates. To fans, he sounded very much like Ted. However, when the Apple TV+ series won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series, Sudeikis really fell into his Ted Lasso character. The actor took the stage next to his fellow cast and crew members and remained utterly silent. He let the executive producer, Bill Lawrence, speak for the group and have his moment.
It was very similar to a time in Ted Lasso Season 2 Episode 3 when Ted steps aside at the press conference so that Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) could speak. It is the player’s time to speak his mind and shine, so Ted steps aside and watches. At the 2021 Emmy Awards, Sudeikis let his director shine and have his moment without giving any additional Emmy speech about Ted Lasso.
Jason Sudeikis backstage at the 2021 Emmy Awards
After winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Ted Lasso, Jason Sudeikis spoke to Marc Istook backstage. The star admitted that he had some massive feelings during the show and the win.
“It’s a little overwhelming being around folks again for the first time, and you know getting this honor from people who do what you do, your peers,” he told Istook. “Yeah, it feels somewhat emotional.”
Sudeikis also explained the one thing he hopes fans learn from watching Ted Lasso.
“Maybe just when someone is in a bad mood, do a little investigation,” he suggested. “Get a little curious before you judge them. We all have bad days.”
