‘Teen Mom’: Bar Smith’s Criminal Charges Updated
Bar Smith has made a host of bad decisions in his life, and his most recent one has landed him in a world of legal trouble. The troubled former Teen Mom star has been languishing in a Nevada jail since July over an incident involving his soon-to-be ex-wife, Ashley Jones, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be getting out anytime soon. The serious charges he was already facing have been upgraded. Bar Smith could be facing years behind bars.
Why was Bar Smith arrested in July?
Police arrested Bar Smith in Henderson Township, Nevada, on July 7. The California resident reportedly broke into Ashley Jones’ home and held her hostage while threatening to harm her. Jones’ mother, who was not in the house at the time of the incident, alerted police in a chilling 911 call.
Smith was apprehended without incident and originally charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor. The original charges included second-degree kidnapping, residential burglary, and coercion constituting domestic violence. He was remanded to jail and has been there ever since. Bar was also on probation in California on gun charges at the time of his Nevada arrest.
The former ‘Teen Mom’ star is facing additional charges
While Smith was already facing three serious charges in connection to the July incident, the Ashley Reality Roundup Group has reported that a Grand Jury agreed to add aggravated stalking to his list of charges. According to the publication, a prosecutor argued that before breaking into Jones’ home, Smith harassed and terrorized his former partner via text messages. Her parents testified that Smith had pulled guns on people, including Jones, on multiple occasions. Smith and Jones had not filed for divorce before the incident occurred but had been living separately for nearly two years. They allegedly parted ways romantically months earlier.
The stalking charge, a class B felony, carries a minimum sentence of two years and a maximum sentence of 15 years behind bars. The stalking charge is classified at the same level as the kidnapping charge Bar was already facing. It carries the same minimum sentence.
Bar Smith was fired by MTV many months before his Nevada arrest. The network reportedly opted to cut ties with the troubled reality TV star after a domestic violence incident occurred in front of the production team.
Bar Smith’s bail has been set at $250,000
With the new charge comes a new bail amount. Bar’s previous bail amount was $35,000. Due to the nature of his crimes and his prior criminal record, his bail amount has increased to $250,000. Bails of $250,000 or more are generally reserved for the most serious crimes. According to The Ashley Reality Roundup Group, the district attorney noted that Smith was not only a flight risk but a danger to his victim, the child he shares with her and her extended family.
At this time, Smith is still being held in a Nevada jail. His trial is set to start at the end of October. It is unclear if he has made bail or is attempting to make bail at this time. His mother, Shen Williams, has been surprisingly quiet about recent events in her son’s life. Ashley Jones has officially filed for divorce. The divorce appears to be uncontested. There is no word on when the split will be finalized.
