Every story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe includes at least one romance. Steve and Peggy in Captain America, T’Challa and Nakia in Black Panther, and Quill and Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy all pulled at our heartstrings between the action.

But, of all the Peters and MJs, there is one couple that fans are drawn to. No, it’s not Tony Stark and Pepper Pots from Iron Man, even though theirs was one of the original Marvel romances. It’s not even Spider-Man and MJ, whose romance resonates with younger audiences.

The number one MCU romance, according to fans, is none other than Hope and Scott, from Ant-Man and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Who is Scott Lang in ‘Ant-Man’?

Scott Lang is an ex-convict who was chosen to be Ant-Man. As a highly skilled burglar, he got a tip that a mansion, the home of Hank Pym, would be empty.

During the owner’s absence, a safe would be left unattended. Down on his luck, and needing money for his daughter’s medical issues, he decides to take the job. The only thing Scott found in the safe was the Ant-Man suit. He took it with him, put it on, and became Ant-Man.

Ant-Man has the power to change in size at will and has relative strength. He is played by Paul Rudd.

Who is Hope in ‘Ant-Man’?

Hope Van Dyne is the daughter of Hank Pym, the original Ant-Man and the new Ant-Man’s mentor. Her mother, Janet Van Dyne, also known as the Wasp, was lost in the quantum realm when she went subatomic to deactivate a missile.

After years of their relationship being strained, Hope and Hank reunite with the goal of bringing Janet back. Working as her father’s assistant, she is required to train alongside Lang.

At first, Janet is resentful of Scott. With time, she warms up to him and then takes on the identity of the Wasp in Ant-Man and the Wasp. It becomes obvious that Hope and Scott are not only involved in quantum entanglement, but there’s also some romance going on there, too.

Hope is portrayed by LOST actress Evangeline Lily.

Hope and Scott’s romance in the MCU

Scenes between Scott and Hope convey some tension, but the two of them remain professional throughout. In the car scene, when Scott is supposed to be under house arrest, it’s obvious that she realizes his value.

In a fight training scene with Scott, Hope more than holds her own, but is willing to give Scott insight into his shortcomings as a fighter. It is at this point we first notice their mutual regard and then after a very emotional scene with her father, Hope and Scott are caught kissing.

It should be noted that Scott’s lack of family — he has a daughter — may be part of what draws him into the circle of Hank and Hope. Their relationship suffered, sure, but now they are working together to restore their family to what it was. Regardless, circumstances are what brought them together and fans think they make a cute pair.

Those who say Scott and Hope are the number one couple seem to like how low-key and natural the relationship is. Their fondness for one another doesn’t require grand gestures that movies typically use to convey a romance: It just is.

One commenter on Reddit expressed: “they just… happen. In a way that is completely natural and true to life.” Another said: “Scott and Hope. I just wish we get to see more of them so that they can officially claim the title of MCU’s cutest couple.”

The verdict is still out on whether Ant-Man 3 will actually happen. If it does, viewers will hopefully get their wish of getting more “Scott and Hope” time.
