The 1 Thing Prince Charles and Princess Diana Remained ‘Professional’ About Following Their Split
Millions of people around the globe watched Prince Charles‘ wedding to Princess Diana in 1981. And many also remember the reports of how messy things got after they separated.
The press had a field day writing about Charles’ salacious affair with Camilla Parker Bowles and couldn’t get enough of the prince and princess’ public mudslinging. But despite how ugly things looked from the outside, some of those working for the royal couple painted a different picture of what was going on at that time. Read on to find out what Charles and Diana always remained ‘professional’ about when they split.
What Prince Charles and Princess Diana were professional about
The Prince and Princess of Wales had a rocky marriage and things really began to fall apart in the late ’80s after their second son, Prince Harry, was born. Charles and Diana decided to split in 1992 and live separately before finally divorcing four years later.
While there was no shortage of fresh reports about the prince and princess battling, their former chef Carolyn Robb claimed that wasn’t how they acted in front of their staff or their children.
“I was aware of [marital problems] mostly through what I read in the press, which was really quite sad,” Robb told The Express. “They were very professional about everything and everything was kept completely normal for the sake of William and Harry.”
Robb added that when they separated she continued working for Prince Charles and still got to see Diana often at Kensington Palace as they kept face for their kids.
How Princes William and Harry found out about Charles’ affair
William and Harry were young when their parents split so they weren’t reading about the breakup daily like the rest of the world.
During her tell-all Panorama interview in 1995, Princess Diana explained that she picked William up from school one day and broke things to him before he heard it somewhere else.
“William asked me what had been going on and could I answer his questions, which I did,” Diana recalled. “He said, was that the reason why our marriage had broken up? And I said, well, there were three of us in this marriage and the pressure of the media was another factor, so the two together were very difficult.”
Diana and Charles sheltered Harry a little more since he was younger but he did learn that his dad was having an affair while watching TV. In the Amazon Prime documentary Diana: The Woman Inside, the princess’ friend, Simone Simmons, said William and Harry were watching a show called The Monarchy Debate when the host, Trevor McDonald, raised the question, “What does the public think? Will Camilla ever be Queen?’”
Harry then asked, “Who’s Camilla?” His big brother responded with, “Don’t you know?”
The princes have never spoken publicly about that conversation.
