‘The Afterparty’: Is the Murder Mystery a Limited Series and Will There Be a Season 2?
Apple TV+‘s murder-mystery comedy is a breakout hit on the streaming platform. Starring Tiffany Haddish and Sam Richardson, The Afterparty follows the events leading up to the death of a pop star (played by Dave Franco) at a high-school reunion afterparty. Viewers tuned in to watch events unfold through the eyes of the suspects as well as the detective trying to solve the case.
Originally a movie script written by Christopher Miller more than a decade ago, The Afterparty proved to be successful for both Miller and his producing partner, Phil Lord. Now, fans want to know if there will be a Season 2 of the hit series.
How to watch ‘The Afterparty’
For those hoping to binge-watch The Afterparty, you can watch it exclusively on Apple TV+. The first episode premiered on January 28, 2022, and the eighth and final episode aired on March 4.
Since Season 1’s conclusion, over 6,000 reviewers have reviewed it on IMDb with a current rating of 7.2/10. Notably, the show has received an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an average audience score of 75%. These ratings may give you a clue concerning a potential renewal for Season 2.
The creators originally wrote ‘The Afterparty’ as a movie
Miller and Lord, co-writers and producers of The Afterparty have a history of working together. Their high-profile projects include 21 Jump Street, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The LEGO Movie, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
However, the initial idea for The Afterparty transpired long before these projects. Miller originally envisioned this story as a movie, writing the initial draft 12 years ago. He knew his partnership with Lord would be an asset to the story. But this was the first time Miller directed a project instead of Lord.
Miller told the Cheat Sheet: “It made natural sense for me to direct but Phil was a big collaborative partner on it throughout from the very beginning, all the way, was with me on set. In many ways, it was not unlike any of the other things that we do which is a collaborative partnership.”
The movie script, however, didn’t leave a lot of room to delve into the complexity of the characters. So Miller and Lord expanded The Afterparty from a movie to a series. This gave the audience time to understand each character and see the world from each point of view. This complexity and detail only add to the show’s appeal.
Apple TV+ renewed ‘The Afterparty’ for Season 2
The Afterparty has brought together a cast of many recognizable names. Haddish plays Detective Danner. It’s her responsibility to investigate the murder of Eugene Xavier Duckworth, an actor and pop star played by Franco. That’s when the mystery of the night begins.
Since the murder happened at an afterparty, many suspects come to light. Aniq (played by Richardson of Veep and Detroiters) serves as a primary suspect. He’s an escape room designer and uses his skills to try to clear his name.
Other cast members include Zoë (Strangers), Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation), Ilana Glaser (Broad City), and Jamie Demetriou (Fleabag). Special guest stars who appear in the series include Channing Tatum and Will Forte.
Viewers can try to solve the mystery while learning about each suspect’s life and how this will impact the future. Now, viewers can get even more involved in this successful ensemble of characters. Before the first season ended, Apple TV+ renewed The Afterparty for Season 2, according to TV Line.
