‘The Bachelor’: Does the Show Film the Breakup and the Final Rose Back to Back?
The finale of The Bachelor has a lot of suspense to it. That’s because the star has to choose between two women after all these weeks. In the same day, the star could dump one woman and propose to the next. Does the show film the breakup and the final rose back to back? Here is everything you need to know.
Producers make sure the women go into the rose ceremony feeling hopeful
There is a lot of preparation that goes into the finale of the show. Although there is always someone who gets turned down at the end, producers still try to keep both women’s spirits up to possibly be let down.
Sarah Gertrude Shapiro used to be a producer on the show and she talked about doing this to someone she knew would get turned down. “The night they were going to get dumped, I would go to the hotel room where they were staying and say, ‘I’m going to lose my job for telling you this, but he’s going to pick you—he’s going to propose,’” she revealed to the New Yorker.
This was to give the contestant a false sense of security, which led to even more tears in the end. That wasn’t the only manipulation used. Shapiro revealed she would be in the limousine afterward where she would play a song that was considered to be the former couple’s “song for their love story” to get them to be more emotional.
There are also things like timing that is kept secret from the women. That’s because timing in the finale is everything.
The star is usually given just an hour between final rose ceremonies
The final rose usually comes down to just two ladies left standing. First one has to meet the bachelor, who then breaks it off with her. The second woman is the one who usually gets the final rose and maybe even an engagement ring.
How long does the bachelor have between breaking up with someone and proposing? “Maybe an hour,” Nick Viall, who was on The Bachelorette Seasons 10 and 11 before becoming the star of The Bachelor Season 21, revealed to Extra “an hour and a half if that. Tops!”
Although the audience knows what it means to be the first or second person to get to the star, the contestants have no clue. “No, you’re just so out of it at that point that you don’t have necessarily the concept of time,” said Viall.
It also doesn’t help that final rose ceremonies have taken place at different times of the day. “It looks like Blake’s and Garrett’s engagement went through during the day,” said Viall referring to the final two of The Bachelorette Season 14. “Mine was with Kaitlyn, for example, was at night in L.A.”
“At that point, I don’t know how much time is in between,” continued the former reality star. “You just don’t know so you think ‘we’ll is this a good time? Is this not a good time?’ You have no idea.”
In the end, the bachelor is given about an hour between turning down one woman and possibly choosing the second one. Producers reportedly try to keep both women hopeful even if it doesn’t work out.
