‘The Bachelorette’: The Real Reason Katie Thurston and Blake Moynes Broke Up
Blake Moynes and Katie Thurston shocked most of Bachelor Nation when they announced that they had broken up. The two got engaged last season on The Bachelorette and seemed to be happy with one another. However, just months after the finale, they called it quits. Here’s what went wrong.
Blake and Katie’s engagement on ‘The Bachelorette’
Blake entered Katie’s season late after first competing on Clare Crawley and Tayshia Adams’ seasons. Despite his late arrival, Blake always planned on getting engaged. He did get cold feet toward the end of the season, but ultimately ended up proposing because he didn’t want to let Katie down.
“I think it speaks a lot to that loyalty and sticking to your word,” Blake told Insider after the proposal. “When you’re thinking about your forever person and partner you rely on, you take their word seriously. And that’s something I came down to at the end. Like no, I’m not letting her down. This is something I also came here for, smarten up, don’t overthink the situation.”
The breakup shocked Bachelor Nation
After the proposal aired on The Bachelorette, Blake and Katie could finally go out in public and be seen with one another. At first, they seemed to be enjoying their time together. But this week, they announced their split.
“It is with mutual love and respect that we have decided to go our separate ways,” they wrote in a joint statement posted to Instagram. “We are so grateful for the moments we shared together and the entire journey that has unfolded this year, but we ultimately have concluded that we are not compatible as life partners, and it is the most caring choice for both of us to move forward independently. We ask for kindness and privacy as we both navigate this transition. Both of us will forever want the best for one another and ask you to please support us in our decision.”
Why did Katie and Blake breakup after ‘The Bachelorette’?
As soon as they made the announcement, fans wondered what had caused such a seemingly strong couple to break up. According to sources, the separation wasn’t due to any “bad reason.”
“They just couldn’t make the long-distance [relationship] work,” the source told Us Weekly. “Katie really missed Blake once he left and they would get into little arguments, but at the end of the day, Katie wished he would be with her more.”
The distance felt especially hard when Blake was working on a wildlife range in Africa. Katie was “super supportive of his work,” but the distance “was too difficult for her to deal with.”
“They definitely tried,” the source said. “[She] didn’t want to put on a facade if they truly weren’t on the best terms.”
Katie had actually alluded to the impending split days before the announcement.
“The short version is we’re figuring it out,” she said before performing a stand-up routine on Whitney Cummings‘ Touch Me Tour. “We don’t know. This is very new to us still. I’m just focusing on myself. He’s focusing on him, and if we work doing that, great.”
