‘The Bad Guys’ Tops ‘Sonic 2’ at the Weekend Box Office With a $24M Opening
The Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie has performed remarkably well, not just for a video game movie but against heavy hitters like The Northman, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. However, DreamWorks’ The Bad Guys topped Sonic 2 at the weekend box office, hitting the $24 million mark.
The top 5 box office performers April 22 – 24 were led by ‘The Bad Guys’ and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 originally released on April 8, 2022, starring Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Colleen O’Shaughnessey as the voice of Miles “Tails” Prower, and Idris Elba as the voice of Knuckles the Echidna. Over the weekend, Sonic 2 earned $15,225,000 at the box office. This is nearly a 50% dip from the previous week.
Meanwhile, The Bad Guys came out swinging, easily topping Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Secrets of Dumbledore, The Northman, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.
The movie follows “several reformed yet misunderstood criminal animals” who “attempt to become good, with some disastrous results along the way,” IMDb notes.
The Bad Guys knocked down $24,000,000 in its opening weekend, doubling what The Northman brought home.

While several new films opened over the April 22 – 24 weekend, The Bad Guys outperformed them all, with the third week of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 coming in close behind.

How much does the DreamWorks movie need to catch up to the Sega adaptation?
While The Bad Guys had a great opening weekend, it still has a long way to go to catch up to Sonic the Hedgehog 2. And with Sega and Paramount Pictures building a Sonic cinematic Universe, the sequels could go head-to-head, too.
Sonic 2 has pulled $145.8 million domestically as of April 24, 2022. That leaves The Bad Guys needing to make up $121 million. However, if it keeps up a strong pace, thanks you the positive reviews, The Bad Guys could quickly catch up.
DreamWorks animation has sometimes struggled to capture audiences’ attention. However, The Bad Guys triumphing over the Sonic and Knuckles brawl proves they still have staying power.
