‘The Batman’: Robert Pattinson Admits His Batsuit Looks Like a ‘Halloween Costume’ in Certain Lighting

The Batman star Robert Pattinson has been pretty candid about his experience portraying the DC superhero. And in a recent interview, the actor talked about his batsuit and revealed how silly it looked in certain lighting.

The batsuit may look fierce, but Pattinson said it took a lot of effort to get that illusion right. He recently opened up about the heavy rubber suit and mask. And he noted it took him a long time to figure out how to angle himself toward the light to avoid making the costume look hokey. 

“There’s a whole different language, body language, you have to learn to make it do what you want it to do,” Pattinson told Movie Maker. “If you look too much into the light, [the mask] looks completely ridiculous, and you’re wearing a Halloween costume.”

“But if you’re like two millimeters down, it’s like — oh, that’s completely totemic, and like it looks exactly how it’s supposed to look,” he continued. “But to learn how to feel that and learn how to react to how the light hits it takes forever.”

Robert Pattinson still got a kick out of seeing himself in the batsuit 

Getting the batsuit to look right may have taken some effort. But for Pattinson, it was all worth it. The actor campaigned for the role in Matt Reeves’ film. And in a video shared by the Associated Press, he said he was thrilled when he first saw himself dressed as the Caped Crusader. 

“I mean, it’s a strange feeling,” Pattinson said during a 2021 red carpet event. “I [had] moments when I was shooting when you just catch a glimpse of yourself in a reflection, and you’d be like, ‘Wait, am I actually doing this? This is crazy!’ But it’s been really fun, and it’s really exciting so far.”

Pattinson also revealed that his The Batman batsuit was challenging to move around in. But he admitted it still felt great to wear. 

“It’s hard, I mean, it’s a combination of the suit does a lot of the work for you, but then when you need to do some work, you have to really fight it,” he said. “But yeah, it’s a very special feeling to put it on.” 

‘The Batman’ star also wore Val Kilmer’s costume from ‘Batman Forever’ 

Reeves talked about Pattinson’s initial screen test during The Batman panel at 2021’s DC FanDome event. And he revealed that the actor tried out Val Kilmer’s Batsuit from the 1995 movie Batman Forever. 

“I remember putting it on and thinking that this is going to be absolutely impossible,” Pattinson told Reeves during the panel after explaining how heavy and hot the costume was. “I guess just trying to move, wearing a kind of two-inch-thick rubber suit or latex suit and being incredibly nervous and full of adrenaline the whole time.”

“I remember we did two takes,” he recalled. “And I was saying, ‘What can we do about this sweat?’”

The Batman release date is March 4, 2022.
