The ‘Below Deck Med’ Crew Admits This Is the One Thing They Can’t Avoid on Charter
Work hard, play hard. That seems to be the Below Deck Mediterranean motto. The team was asked about their eating habits while on charter and many of the crew members craved pretty much the same thing.
Last charter season of Below Deck, viewers saw a few crew members scarf down some serious bowls of ice cream. Former bosun Chandler Brooks appeared to especially have an affinity for the sugary, cold confection. He even blew off chief stew Kate Chastain’s orders to help with the interior for a bowl of ice cream.
But the Below Deck Med crew admits they have their own culinary kryptonite they just can’t avoid diving into while on charter. So is it ice cream or do they simply crave (and can’t avoid) anything sweet?
Some can’t find time to eat
Viewers know that yacht work is pretty intense. Both the interior and exterior crew are constantly in demand, whether they are pouring cocktails or dragging out the dreaded waterslide.
This means sometimes crew members forget (or just don’t have time to eat). Chief stew Hannah Ferrier says she’s going to try to eat a little more this season. “Especially when you get stressed out or are anxious when you are working so much, you really don’t eat a lot,” she admits.
Deckhand Colin Macy-O’Toole says staying healthy on a yacht is tough. But, “When you are working your ass off 24/7 you are basically burning off everything you are putting down.”
Good luck with meal planning too
Many of the yachties reveal they are lucky to just grab whatever is in front of them. Bosun Joao Franco says his eating habits are “bad” and staying healthy is pretty hard. Macy-O’Toole adds you have to just eat whatever is in front of you and there’s no time to be picky.
Stewardess Anastasia Surmava says you don’t have time to plan meals. “Right, this is what I’m going to have to breakfast, and this is my lunch and this is my dinner,” she says. Instead, “You’re thinking about ‘What am I going to feed these people’ so you don’t have time to take care and think of yourself.” Stewardess Aesha Scott says she loves to savor her food, but when she’s on charter, she’s eating so fast she tastes nothing.
Deckhand Jack Stirrup says he basically just grazes like a cow and nibbles all day. Franco adds, “Eat, sleep work repeat.” Wait. “Eat, sleep work, drink…a lot, repeat,” he laughs.
And this is one food most just can’t avoid
When you are stressed and hungry, grabbing something sweet is something you just can’t avoid. Captain Sandy Yawn says she depends on her espresso machine, sugar-free Redbull. But also she loves her peanut M&M’s.
“The first thing you grab for when you are tired is a sweet in the jar,” Franco admits laughing. “Just gotta keep my hands out of the cookie jar this year.”
Something sweet is also what deckhand Travis Michalzik goes for too. “On charter, I will probably eat chocolate every day to soothe the emptiness you have inside,” he jokes.
Below Deck Mediterranean is back, Monday, June 3 at 9/8c.
