He makes a shocking discovery revealing that Dembe may have turned on him in the past. Will Red embark on a quest for revenge?
What happened in ‘The Blacklist’ Season 9 Episode 6?
Liz’s daughter Agnes returns in The Blacklist Season 9 Episode 6, and it looks like Cooper has been letting her and Red spend some time together. The pair sit down to play a memory game naming the capitals of U.S. states. However, Agnes remarks that the game isn’t fair for Red because he is from Russia.
Agnes goes on to say that her mother, Liz told her everything she needs to know about Red. She remembers Liz saying, “Raymond Reddington was the most important person in her life,” apart from her daughter. This leads Red to wonder whether Liz really did read the letter he wrote her revealing his true identity.
Red finds the letter and has a forensic analyst test it for Liz’s fingerprints. He explains to Weecha that he does not want the prints to match. If Liz knew the truth, it could be the reason she hesitated to shoot Red, and the reason she died in the end. However, the prints come back as a match, which would seem to confirm that Liz knew Red’s identity before she died.
Will Red seek revenge on Dembe in ‘The Blacklist’ Season 9?
Since Red intrusted Dembe with the letter, he assumes that Dembe ignored his instructions to only give Liz the letter after he was dead. Red is startling upset. He tells Dr. Roberta Sand, Ph.D., “I recently discovered that I was betrayed by my oldest and closest friend. I’m apprehensive about the depth and breadth of my anger.”
At the time, Red and Sand are on their way to a remote island. Sand has agreed to counsel Red for a few months. It’s possible she will help him to get past some of his anger. However, knowing Red it seems unlikely that he will easily forgive and forget Dembe’s betrayal. Yet there’s a slight possibility that things didn’t go down the way Red thinks they did.
Fans think the reveal in episode 6 might not be as straightforward as it seems
There’s still a possibility that Liz actually didn’t know the truth in the end. “If Liz read the letter why does Red open it with a letter opener?” a fan wondered on Reddit. “I guess Liz could have resealed it but to really know if she read the letter he’d need to get that tested for prints too, not just the envelope.”
Another fan suggested an explanation for how Liz’s fingerprints could appear on the letter without her knowing the truth. “You watch, he only had the envelope tested for prints. We assume Liz knew what was inside but they’ll play it off in episodes to come by a flashback to Dembe giving her the letter, Liz holding the envelope, then going ‘I can’t read this. I want Red to tell me himself.’ and handing it back.” Hopefully, episode 7 will have more answers.
