‘The Blacklist’ Season 9 Finale Ending Explained and What It Means for Season 10
The Blacklist Season 9 finale finally gave fans a hint as to what season 10 could be about. Now that the man who orchestrated Liz Keen’s murder is dead, the show will have to move past Raymond Reddington’s quest for revenge. Marvin Gerard set events in motion that will have serious consequences for Red. Here’s everything you need to know.
Wujing returned in ‘The Blacklist’ Season 9 finale
A familiar face returned in The Blacklist Season 9 finale. While Marvin Gerard was in prison, he briefly ran into none other than Wujing, No. 84 on the blacklist. Way back in season 1, Red helped the task force take Wujing, an extremely dangerous assassin, into FBI custody.
When Marvin meets Wujing in prison in the season 9 finale, the latter states that he is serving life without the possibility of parole. However, Wujing now has an escape plan. The only trouble is that he needs to get to the courthouse, but he hasn’t been able to find an acceptable reason for a judge to grant him a hearing. Marvin supplies Wujing with the reason he needs.
‘The Blacklist’ Season 9 finale ending explained
Red finally gets an audience with Marvin in The Blacklist Season 9 finale. Although Red could have killed him at that moment, he chooses to hold off and allow Marvin to go out on his own terms. Shortly after Marvin is released from prison, he shoots and kills himself in his car.
However, Marvin has one more order of business before ending his life. He addresses Wujing before leaving the prison and reveals that Red is a CI who has been working with the FBI for years. Red is the reason that Wujing and many other blacklisters are in jail. Marvin then gives Wujing a list of blacklisters who Red has put away.
In the final scene of The Blacklist Season 9 finale, Wujing successfully makes his escape from prison. However, he reveals that now he does not plan to go home. Instead, Wujing wants to kill Raymond Reddington. Wujing knows he can’t do it alone, but he doesn’t have to. He has a whole list of criminals who have been wronged by Red.
Here’s what the finale ending means for season 10
The Blacklist showrunner John Eisendrath promised that the season 9 final would be “the final chapter of the Liz Keen story,” while speaking with TV Insider. Liz is dead and now so is the man responsible for her death. The show seems ready to move on from Liz, but that left fans wondering what season 10 could be about.
After the season 9 finale, things are a lot clearer. TV Insider teased that season 9 “ends with a revelation that puts Reddington in greater peril than ever before.” Now it’s clear that season 10 will likely follow Wujing’s plan to gather dangerous criminals who Red has betrayed in an effort to take him down. Due to Amir Arison and Laura Sohn’s departure from the show, it’s also reasonable to expect that season 10 will add a few new series regulars.
