Novlan is one of two new characters on The Bold and the Beautiful that were written in when the show came back from a production break due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
His character, Dr. John “Finn” Finnegan, was introduced as a doctor and a love interest for Steffy Forrester. Finn was one of two new characters et for when production resumed, with the other being Zende Forrester, who was not a new character per se but a new iteration of a legacy character.
In July, Novlan said he couldn’t begin filming his scenes until July, despite the fact that he was initially cast in March. The actor’s first experience on a daytime soap opera is an interesting one, giving all of the safety protocols and other situations surrounding the pandemic
Novlan talks about his first moments on set
in a new interview with Soap Opera Digest, Novlan talked about arriving to the set of the show for the first time. “It wasn’t that long ago but it seems like it was,” he said of the day. “It was not a normal first day. It was the first day of shooting in America during a pandemic, so there’s a lot that stands out — the face masks and guidelines and regulations and the blocking, and just seeing everyone so focused on keeping everyone safe. It was very structured and well-choreographed.”
He also talked about the precautions that were taken so that everything would be able to be done right. “They’d done a lot of dry runs to make sure everyone would be safe and able to work and get the shots we needed,” he added. “Yes, it was a little strange, but this is our new normal, and we were able to work around it, so it has been great.”
Novlan is super recognizable from a Liberty Mutual insurance commercial that airs frequently. However, the actor says he hasn’t been recognized that often yet, seemingly because not as many people are out and about due to the pandemic. “I have been working a lot and we’re trying to stay responsible with the quarantine,” he said. “I haven’t really had that experience yet. I’ve been lying low to try and stay safe, so I am really excited to interact with the fans once we get a handle on this pandemic.”
The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays on CBS.
