‘The Boys’ Season 3 Makeup Department Ran Out of Fake Sperm and Blood
Amazon’s series, The Boys, brings the comic heroes to life, and season 3 is causing a stir with its graphic content. The Boys Season 3 Episode 6, “Herogasm,” takes the series to new and inappropriate heights with everything that goes down. Billy Butcher actor Karl Urban said the makeup department ran out of necessary props. Here’s what he said about them running out of fake sperm and blood.

‘The Boys’ Season 3 Episode 6, ‘Herogasm,’ features graphic content
Author Garth Ennis and illustrator Darick Robertson wrote The Boys comic series. Together, they created the source material for The Boys Season 3 Episode 6, “Herogasm.” Entertainment Weekly notes that “Herogasm” shows the superheroes heading to a remote island for an orgy after lying to the public about heading to space to fight aliens. Ultimately, the concept wasn’t an easy sell to Amazon, executive producer Eric Kripke explained. But Amazon went forth with it after two successful seasons of the show.
“I was exploring the set for the first time and it was loaded with sex toys that I didn’t even know existed, sex swings, and a bed that rotates on an electrical rotation device,” actor Erin Moriarty said. “It just was filled with so many goodies.”
“I’ve never seen so much full-frontal nudity, simulated sex, genitalia in my life that by day five, I was walking around a house full of naked people and I was like, ‘They may as well be dressed. It doesn’t matter anymore,'” Moriarty continued. “But it was also so hilarious that I would even become desensitized to something like that.”

The team creating The Boys Season 3 Episode 6, “Herogasm,” certainly needed a ton of props. And Billy Butcher actor Karl Urban said the makeup department ran out of one specific prop — fake sperm.
“Listen, I think that every single season you get to a juncture where you’re like: ‘How can we possibly get away with this?’ And this season, it became pretty apparent that everything was dialed up,” Urban explained to Digital Spy. “There’s more action, more drama, more heart. And I think it pushed all the departments. Like, the makeup department, they ran out of fake blood [in] episode 3, and sperm [in] episode 6. So, it was a challenge for all involved.”
If the production team had more time and money to spend on the episode, executive producer Eric Kripke noted he would’ve added a scene that involved “these massive firehoses of fluid that get sprayed,” according to TVLine. “There was going to be a female one that was going to get sprayed all over Hughie and that was going to be a running joke,” he continued.
Is ‘The Boys’ Season 3 the final season?
Will fans get to see more of their favorite heroes after The Boys Season 3? Thankfully, the show will return for a fourth season. Vernon Sanders, the head of global television at Amazon Studios, expressed his excitement.
“The Boys continues to push boundaries in storytelling while also being relentlessly entertaining and threading the needle on social satire that feels all too real,” he wrote. “This stylized world of the series has incredible global reach and the viewership for opening weekend is proof of that. We are immensely proud of the cast and crew that has spawned a franchise for Prime Video, and we look forward to bringing more of The Boys to our customers.”
