‘The Boys’: See ‘Supernatural’ Star Jensen Ackles Suited up as Soldier Boy in 1st Pic
Supernatural fans have been waiting since last fall to see Jensen Ackles on screen again. They’re going to wait a little longer to see him on season 3 of The Boys, but Amazon has given fans a little something to tide them over.
Amazon released the first picture of Ackles in his Soldier Boy costume June 7. Costume designer Laura Jean Shannon and The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke also commented on the costume.
When is Jensen Ackles joining ‘The Boys’?
Kripke added a role for Ackles in season 3. Ackles will be playing the role of Soldier Boy and he made the announcement on a Sept. 9 Instagram post. The Boys still had to wait for Ackles to finish Supernatural.
Based on the Garth Ennis comic book, The Boys is a draker take on superheroes. In a world in which superheroes aren’t necessarily idealistic saviors, Soldier Boy is a super who became famous fighting in World War II. 75 years later, Soldier Boy still looks like Jensen Ackles, only with a beard now.
What will Jensen Ackles look like on ‘The Boys’?
The photo shows Ackles in a green suit with a diamond shaped shield, kind of a darker spin on Captain America’s WWII uniform. Costume designer Laura Jean Shannon said she imagined Soldier Boy as the super who came before The Seven.
“Soldier Boy is the original bad ass,” Shannon said in a statement. “Our goal was to highlight a bygone era of overt masculinity and grit. With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier’s practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger. We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude, luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that.”
‘Supernatural’ creator Eric Kripke responds to Jensen Ackles suited up
Kripke created Supernatural and ran the series for the first five seasons. Little did Kripke know that Supernatural would tie Ackles up for another 10 years after Kripke’s own departure. When Ackles became available again, Kripke remembered him. Now, Kripke got to see Ackles as Soldier boy for the first time, too.
“When I cast Jensen as Soldier Boy, the first thing I said was, ‘I’m most excited for you, because of the amazing process you’ll go through with LJ, our Super Suit designer.’ It took six months but the experience surpassed Jensen’s expectations. LJ has made a work of art that tips its hat to the WWII Soldier Boy from the comics, while taking it in a sleek new direction. And if you think the photos are cool, just wait till you see Jensen in action. It’s one of my very favorite suits. Also, now you can quit clogging my Twitter notifications with demands to see it.”
