‘The Carol Burnett Show’: Carol Burnett Revealed the Hilarious Way Co-Star Tim Conway Was Pulled Over By a Cop

Carol Burnett recruited frequent guest star Tim Conway to join the cast of The Carol Burnett Show in 1974, when co-star Lyle Waggoner left the series. Sharing a story of the late comedian’s humor that she referred to as “pure Conway,” Burnett revealed why her cast mate had toilet paper wrapped around his head when he was stopped by a police officer.

With Conway being notorious for his comedic antics, Burnett was often questioned about the comedian’s personality behind the scenes.

“I am frequently asked what Tim is like in ‘real life,'” she wrote in her 2016 memoir In Such Good Company: Eleven Years of Laughter, Mayhem, and Fun in the Sandbox. “The answer: he is sweet, kind, considerate, thoughtful – and gloriously nutty!“

Providing an example of his out-of-the-box humor, Burnett shared a story of attending a party one night with her husband, Joe Hamilton. When they arrived, they saw Conway with a peculiar accessory to his attire for the evening.

“When Joe and I got there, Tim was sitting on the couch with his whole head wrapped tightly in toilet paper,” Burnett recalled. “He had punched in holes for his eyes and his mouth, but that was it. He was definitely not drunk, but beyond that I don’t know how or why he had decided to become Claude Rains in The Invisible Man!”

Conway kept the toilet paper on his face the entire evening, where the party guests became accustomed to his new look.

“He never broke character the entire evening, and we didn’t even seem to notice his getup after a while,” the famous redhead revealed. “Our host took a Polaroid of Tim, and his face came out the size of a postage stamp.”

The picture inspired Conway to change up one of his photo identification cards before leaving the gathering, with the toilet paper still wrapped around his head and face.

“Tim carefully trimmed it and inserted the Polaroid over his regular driver’s license picture,” Burnett wrote. “As Joe and I were leaving, we saw Tim get in his car still looking like the Invisible Man. What happened next is pure Conway.”

Burnett went on to reveal that Conway took a strategic way home that night in the hopes of sharing his new look.

“He knew there was one particular street in this San Fernando neighborhood where a cop liked to lie in wait behind some bushes near a four-way stop,” the comedy icon explained. “Tim intentionally eased on through and saw the red light come to life behind him.”

Stopping after seeing the flashing lights, Conway presented the police officer with his ‘updated’ driver’s license.

“He pulled over and rolled down his window,” Burnett wrote. “The policeman looked at Tim, still wrapped in toilet paper, and, in a stern voice, asked for his license. Time handed it right over.”

Burnett concluded her story with, “Fortunately, the cop had a sense of humor.”
