MTV’s ‘The Challenge’ Season 37 halted production due to coronavirus scare

MTV’s The Challenge Season 37 was already delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. But rumors suggest production had to halt early on while filming the season due to a coronavirus scare amongst the cast. According to fans in the know, production stopped on April 26, 2021. MTV hasn’t yet commented on the situation.

It looks like the season will address the shutdown instead of skipping over it, though. Additional spoilers revealed a few alternates — including Double Agents winner Amber Borzotra — entered the game after the shutdown. And a few others from the cast left the show due to the shutdown.

Showrunner Emer Harkin addressed coronavirus concerns with Variety in the past, too. She noted if production was to halt due to the virus, the issue would get addressed on the show, too. Additionally, if any player tested positive mid-season, they would get removed from the game.

Showrunners for MTV’s The Challenge continue to remain mum about the alleged production shutdown. But rumors carry on, and they now suggest the end of Spies, Lies, and Allies is sped up to accommodate for the time lost during the filming hiccup.

The Challenge Chronicles podcast addressed this rumor. “The other thing that they talk about — T.J. [Lavin] does the, ‘And the twists keep on coming,'” the podcaster notes in regards to the season 37 trailer. “I have, from a very good source, that they added some twists toward the end of the season to speed it up to reach a faster end date. So, a lot of the stuff that happens is apparently very blind-siding to the cast because of their production schedule. So, we will have to wait and see how that plays out. But you can tell from the trailer that there is some chicanery that will go on.”

Fans who watched the trailer for season 37 can see a few moments where the cast looks shocked at the beginning of the game, too. Perhaps the twists start even earlier than expected.
