There’s Going To Be a Super Long Delay for ‘The Crown’ Season 5
Season 4 of The Crown, which introduced Princess Diana, has finally arrived on Netflix. This season will open with the British royal family at the end of the tumultuous 1970s. Season 4 will explore Prince Charles and Diana’s royal engagement and Queen Elizabeth II’s relationship with Britain’s first female Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson).
According to the press release from Netflix, “While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.”
However, it will be quite sometime before fans will see any new episodes of The Crown again.
Season 6 will be the final season of ‘The Crown’
Initially, Morgan always had plans for a total of six seasons for The Crown. However, fans were stunned and horrified when Netflix announced in Jan. 2020 that Season 5 of the British drama would be the final season.
Thankfully the streaming service and Netflix have modified their position once again. “As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” Peter Morgan said in a statement.
From what we understand, Season 5 will push the series into the late ’90s meaning that the final season will end in the early 2000s. However, Morgan has been adamant that anything too recent like Megxit is out of the question.
‘The Crown’s cast is getting a major shake up again
As The Crown did between the second and third season, switching Claire Foy and Matt Smith, who played Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip respectively for Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies, the cast will be changing again for the final two seasons of the show.
Imelda Staunton, who many fans know as the deplorable Delores Umbridge from the Harry Potter franchise, will portray the queen. Jonathan Pryce of Game of Thrones’ fame will be Prince Philip. Taking over for Helena Bonham Carter, Lesley Manville will transform into Princess Margaret. Elizabeth Debicki will become Princess Diana while The Wire’s Dominic West will portray the Prince of Wales.
As always with Peter Morgan’s lavish series, it will undoubtedly be stunning.
There is going to be a super long wait for ‘The Crown’ Season 5
While we are thrilled to finally be getting a glimpse at Emma Corrin’s Princess Diana in Season 4 of The Crown, don’t expect to see the next season of the critically acclaimed series for quite some time. After all, filming was delayed amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Now that Season 4 of filming is complete, The Crown’s production crew is taking an extensive break. Filming for Season 5 is slated to begin in June 2021. Deadline is reporting that episodes will return to Netflix sometime in 2022.
This is not unheard of. When the cast changed between Season 2 and Season 3, a two-year-gap was also between the two shows. Still, we’re sure that it’s going to be worth the wait.
